VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Fourth-ranked Villanova scored the game's first 15 points and never trailed in a 71-50 victory over Creighton on Sunday night.
Villanova improved to 18-2 with the win 5-2 in BIG EAST action, while Creighton fell to 9-12 (0-8 BIG EAST).
Villanova made its first four attempts from three-point range and scored the game's first 15 points, holding Creighton without a basket until Tyler Clement's offensive putback with 12:45 left in the first half. The Jays had come up empty in its first eight possessions, a stark contrast from last year's shooting display at Villanova when CU opened the game with nine consecutive three-point baskets.
Despite the rough start, Creighton fought back, holding Villanova to four points over the next nine minutes to get within 19-11. 'Nova held CU scoreless over the next five minutes, scoring 10 straight points to build a 29-11 lead before Avery Dingman's three-pointer to close the first half cut CU's deficit to 15.
Darrun Hilliard had 14 points for VU in the first frame, including four three-pointers. The Wildcats took advantage of 12 Bluejay turnovers, converting them into 15 points.
Geoffrey Groselle provided a spark early in the second half, scoring a pair of baskets to force a Wildcat timeout with 18:18 to play after CU trimmed its deficit to 31-19. The Wildcats would steadily pull away from there, as CU never got any closer.
Hilliard had a season-best 24 points for VU, his fourth game this season of 20 or more points, while Ryan Arcidiacono added 10. Villanova shot 12-of-26 from three-point range, including 6-of-10 marksmanship by Hilliard. The Wildcats forced 19 turnovers and turned those into 21 points.
Creighton was paced by James Milliken, who scored 13 points, while Austin Chatman had nine points and six rebounds. Milliken and Chatman also led CU with six rebounds each, as the Jays won the board battle 40-27 and had an edge in second-chance points, 15-1.
