Winters and Bird post double-doubles as Booth wins 250th
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Creighton Volleyball team overcame a first set loss to defeat third-place Xavier in four sets on Saturday night at Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The victory was the 250th at Creighton for head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth.
Scores of the match were 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-21.
The win, Creighton's (15-7) 10th straight, moves the Bluejays to 9-0 at the midpoint of BIG EAST play. Xavier dropped to 10-9 with just its second home loss of the year, and is 6-3 in league play.
"Xavier came out playing just incredible defense and we really struggled to get a kill, while they were putting balls down," said Booth. "We challenged our hitters to get more creative with their hitting and I thought they did a great job with that."
"Xavier is a great team," noted Booth. "This is a great road win and our blockers did a good job neutralizing their powerful hitters as the match went on."
Jaali Winters led Creighton with 17 kills and added 11 digs for her team-best eighth double-double. Fellow outside hitter Jess Bird had 14 kills and 12 digs for her sixth double-double. Maggie Baumert set her third straight match and finished with 45 assists, eight digs and six kills while hitting .625, and Kate Elman had a team-high 13 digs.
The Bluejays hit .299 and had 60 kills, three aces, 61 digs and seven blocks. Xavier finished with 53 kills, four aces, 56 digs, eight blocks and hit .262. It's just the fourth time in Booth's 13-year tenure that Creighton has won when allowing an opponent to hit .250 or better.
Creighton returns home for two matches next weekend, beginning with Friday's 7 pm match vs. Providence.
