NEW YORK -- Following No. 1 Creighton's unbeaten week, freshman Joel Rydstrand was named BIG EAST Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The honor is the first such distinction of Rydstrand's collegiate career.
Rydstrand was part of a defensive unit that allowed just one goal and limited opponents to just 13 shots, four on goal, in another 2-0 week for undefeated and top-ranked Creighton.
Against Butler, Rydstrand came in to start the second half and played a part of a unit that limited the Bulldogs to just one shot on goal in that period.
Three days later, Rydstrand earned the start against Marquette and helped limit the Golden Eagles to just three shots on goal. He added to the win on the offensive side, as well, by scoring the eventual game-winner in the 32nd-minute with a shot from the top of the 18.
Creighton, the nation's lone unbeaten and untied team, will host league opponent, Villanova, on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
