PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore Marysa Wilkinson had career-highs with 14 kills and a .650 hitting percentage as the Creighton Volleyball team picked up its fifth straight victory with a 3-0 sweep at Providence on Saturday evening.
Scores of the match were 25-23, 25-19, 25-20.
Creighton (10-7, 4-0 BIG EAST) won a close first set that featured 12 ties and eight lead changes, but had to rally from an early 7-2 deficit to do so. Lauren Smith had six kills and Wilkinson added five as Kenzie Crawford (12 assists) consistently found her middles for points.
The Bluejays posted a workmanlike 25-19 victory in the second set to head to the intermission with a 2-0 lead. CU hit .343 in the frame with Crawford dishing 11 more assists and Wilkinson putting down six kills.
Creighton would also fall behind early in the third set before 4-0 serving runs by Kate Elman and Jaali Winters gave CU a 19-15 cushion late. Providence drew within one at 20-19 before Ashley Jansen served up another 4-0 run and after a Friar sideout, CU would clinch the match on a service error by the hosts.
Despite the sweep, Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth left optimistic that her team still has much to improve on in. "I thought our hitting was not the issue, but our serve and pass game was not where we expect it to be. We pride ourselves on being a good serve and pass team and when we don't do that well, other things tend to follow suit."
Wilkinson led the Bluejays with 14 kills to tie her previous best, while her .650 hitting percentage was her collegiate high. Wilkinson also added a match-high five blocks. Smith added 12 kills on .500 hitting while Crawford finished with 32 assists and eight digs. Elman topped the Bluejay defense with 12 digs.
Kayla Fitzgerald led Providence with nine kills but hit just .121.
Creighton won all the stat categories, including kills (45-30), hitting percentage (.298-.151), aces (6-3), digs (41-35) and blocks (8-2).
Creighton will host three matches next week, beginning with Tuesday night's 7 pm match vs. Georgetown (7-10, 1-3 BIG EAST) at D.J. Sokol Arena.
