Volleyball Wins Sixth Straight With Sweep of Georgetown

OMAHA, Neb. -- Jess Bird had 15 kills and 16 digs on .412 hitting as Creighton Volleyball swept Georgetown on Tuesday for its sixth straight win.
Scores of the match were 25-17, 25-22, 25-19.
Creighton (11-7, 5-0 BIG EAST) remains in first place in the BIG EAST, while Georgetown fell to 7-11 (1-4 BIG EAST).
Three-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Jaali Winters had 11 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the fall to aid Creighton's cause.
Georgetown was led by nine kills each from Alyssa Sinnette and Symone Speech.
Creighton broke free from a 7-7 tie in the first set thanks to strong serving from Ashley Jansen, who earned her first start of the year at setter and delivered a 6-0 surge. CU maintained at least a five point edge the rest of the frame, as Bird had five kills and Winters contributed four kills and five digs to lead a Bluejay offense that hit .438.
Creighton trailed most of the second set and didn't take its first lead until Jansen authored a 4-0 run behind the service line to make it 21-19, Bluejays. Though Georgetown answered to tie the score, kills from Bird, Lauren Smith and Winters pushed CU to the brink, and a Hoya serving error gave CU the 25-22 decision and a 2-0 lead at intermission. Bird had five kills and seven digs in the set on .385 hitting, as CU amassed 20 kills and 24 digs in the stanza.
The Bluejay raced to a 9-1 lead early in the third set and never trailed, but GU made things interesting. The Hoyas drew within 16-15 before CU pulled away late. Brittany Lawrence and Marysa Wilkinson teamed for a block on match point of CU's 25-19 victory. Bird had five kills and eight digs in the final set for CU.
Creighton won all the statistical categories, including kills (49-36), hitting percentage (.336-.169), aces (2-1), digs (62-48) and blocks (7-2).
Creighton returns to the court on Friday at 7 pm when it hosts DePaul in the school's annual Pink Out.
