Omaha, Neb. - Paced by 15 three-pointers as a unit and 19 points from sophomore Sydney Lamberty, the Creighton women's basketball team blew out Marist 89-46 on Sunday, Nov. 15.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 2-0 on the season, while Marist fell to 0-2.
Things clicked from the onset of the contest for Creighton as the Bluejays built a 21-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Lamberty opened the game by hitting Creighton's first shot from long range with 9:17 showing on the clock in quarter number one. The next six buckets came from different Bluejays as Creighton's depth shined. Lamberty was the first Bluejay to knocked a second field goal, another trey, this one book ending the run with 2:17 left.
It wasn't simply the Bluejay offense working on Sunday as Creighton held Marist to just six points in the second quarter to take a 42-16 lead into the half. The Bluejays forced the Red Foxes into eight turnovers in first half and 15 in the contest.
The Bluejays continued to put the pedal to the floor in the second half, outscoring Marist 21-11 in the third and pushing the lead to 46 points in the final period.
"From a coaching stand point, it doesn't come much more fun than today." said head coach Jim Flanery. "Thinking about the travel Marist had from South Dakota State after a late game on Friday, I told the team it would be great to get out to a good start, when you jump out 21-2 it is much easier. "
Lamberty's 19 points led all Bluejays, while freshman Audrey Faber also closed the game in double figures with 12 points. Three other Bluejays put up nine points as both senior Tessa Leytem and sophomore Myah Mellman knocked down three trifecta's to reach career-high, while senior Marissa Janning had nine points and a career-best 10 assists.Â
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 when the Bluejays play their first road contest of the season at Drake at 7 pm.
