Despite 19 From Faber, Women's Basketball Falls to Drake 81-72

Des Moines, Iowa - Despite a team-high 19 points from local product Audrey Faber, the Creighton women's basketball team suffered its first loss of 2015-16 at Drake, 81-72, on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-1 on the season, while Drake moved to 4-0.
Drake was the aggressor early in the contest, scoring the first seven points in route to building an 18-8 lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter. Creighton, however, closed the period with 11 consecutive points to claim a 19-18 edge after one period. Sophomore Sydney Lamberty got the Bluejays going with a jumped from the left elbow. Faber took over in the final 2:22 with back-to-back bombs from long range, then closed the quarter with a traditional three-point play to give Creighton the edge.
Creighton continued its run into the early moments of the second quarter as the Bluejays built a 29-22 lead, their largest of the game, with 6:10 remaining. The combined stretch of 9:47 saw the Bluejays outscore Drake 21-4, but the Bulldogs responded. Drake rallied with an 11-4 run of its own to tie the score at 33-33 and took a 39-38 edge into halftime.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair. The Bluejays struck first with an 11-4 run early in the third to take a 49-43 edge (6:05). Creighton got treys from juniors MC McGrory, Lauren Works and senior Marissa Janning during the spurt. Drake answered with eight straight points to take a 51-49 edge with 2:37 left, but Creighton closed the period with another burst to take a 59-56 advantage into the final period.
Creighton pushed its lead to 67-62 with 7:08 remaining on Works' third trifecta and held a 69-64 lead with 5:51 left. The last run, however, came from the Bulldogs as Drake outscored Creighton 17-3 down the stretch.
Faber's 19 led the Bluejays, while McGrory finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Two other Bluejays reached double-figures as Works posted 13 points and Janning had 12.
Five Bulldogs ended the contest with at least 10 points, led by a game-high 20 from Lizzy Wendell.
The Bluejays return to action on Thursday, Nov. 26 as Creighton battles East Carolina in the opening game for both squads in the Lone Star Showcase at 7:30 pm.
