Men's Soccer standouts become 7th and 8th Academic All-America selections in program history
GREENWOOD, Ind. — As announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday, Creighton Men's Soccer's Fabian Herbers and Vincent Keller have been tabbed as CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees, becoming the seventh and eighth Academic All-America selections in program history.
CoSIDA's Academic All-America Men's Soccer Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Both international business majors, Herbers and Keller have maintained impressive grade point averages of 3.47 and 3.58, respectively, while helping Creighton to maintain its standing as one of the elite collegiate soccer programs in the nation.
Herbers earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors, while Keller earned Third Team honors, marking just the third time that multiple Creighton student-athletes from the same sport have received such accolades in the same season.
This year, the duo has contributed greatly to the Bluejays notching 18 wins, tied for the most in NCAA Division I Men's Soccer, and clinching the program's fourth NCAA Third Round appearance in the last five years. Creighton will square off against North Carolina on Saturday for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals of the national tournament.
Herbers, a junior from Ahaus, Germany, is the nation's leading point scorer with 45 (15G, 15A). A unanimous choice as the BIG EAST's Offensive Player of the Year this season, Herbers is just the fifth Bluejay player all-time to record 45 points in a single season. His selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team this year marks the second-consecutive season in which he has earned Academic All-America accolades after being named to the Third Team in 2014.
With this year's distinction, Herbers becomes the second student-athlete in Creighton Men's Soccer program history, alongside Brian Holt (2011)—and seventh in Creighton Athletics history—to earn Academic All-America First Team honors.
Meanwhile, Keller, a senior from Freiberg, Germany, has helped anchor Creighton's defense during the Bluejays' run to the NCAA Third Round. The two-year captain was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times this season and earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors. His 6,595 minutes played over the past four years is a team-best. In 2014, Keller earned BIG EAST All-Academic honors and was named Creighton's Carl M. Reinert, S.J., Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
