Volleyball Advances to BIG EAST Final With Win Over Marquette

Bluejays seek second straight league tournament title
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton will get a chance to defend its BIG EAST Championship title after defeating Marquette in five sets on Friday afternoon in semifinal action at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 20-25, 15-10 as Creighton improved to 24-8 with its third win this fall over Marquette. MU fell to 21-11.
Creighton will meet Villanova (25-7) in Saturday's 1 pm final that will be televised nationally on FS2 after the second-seeded Wildcats swept Xavier (25-20, 25-19, 25-17).
Jaali Winters had 21 kills and 17 digs on a Creighton-record 77 attack attempts, while Maggie Baumert had 45 assists, 15 digs and seven blocks for CU. Bluejay seniors Kate Elman (23) and Melanie Jereb (20) each had 20+ digs. The Bluejays had 56 kills, three aces, 100 digs and 12.0 blocks while hitting .136.
Marquette was paced by 27 kills from Taylor Louis, while Lauren Houg had 35 digs. The Golden Eagles hit .111 and finished with 56 kills, four aces, 105 digs and 13.0 blocks overall.
The Bluejays cruised through the first two sets with 25-19 and 25-16 victories. Winters had 10 kills in the opener while Elman had a dozen digs by the intermission as CU looked to close out its third sweep of MU this fall.
Marquette had other ideas.
The Golden Eagles opened the third set by taking leads of 6-1 and 13-3. The Bluejays trailed 19-8 before mounting a huge comeback that fell just short. Jereb sparked a long serving run that drew the Bluejays within 23-21 before MU won a 25-21 set after scoring the final two points. MU had 31 digs and six blocks in the third set, while CU had 28 digs and five blocks. Combined, the clubs combined for 18 kills and 21 attack errors on 101 swings in the frame.
Louis got it going in the fourth set, as well, delivering nine kills in 12 swings to help seal a 25-20 victory and force a fifth set.
CU shifted the momentum in the fifth set, taking a 3-2 lead when Baumert and Marysa Wilkinson stuffed Louis. The Jays took the lead for good at 5-4 as part of a 4-0 run on Baumert's serve. Marquette would thrice get within one or two points, only to follow with a service error. The Bluejays later used a 5-1 run to get to match point, which they converted on Baumert's only kill of the afternoon.
