Austin, Texas - Trailing 56-52 with just over one minute left in regulation the Creighton women's basketball team rallied to down Eastern Washington, 66-60, in overtime on Saturday, Nov. 28 in the final game for both teams in the Lone Star Showcase.
Creighton moved to 4-2 on the season with the win, closing the Lone Star Showcase at 2-1. Eastern Washington, meanwhile, dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the Thanksgiving weekend tournament.
Down four in the closing second the Bluejays sophomore Sydney Lamberty made it a one possession game with 1:01 left as she drove to the lane and drew a foul, then calmly sank two free throws. Back on defense Creighton nearly forced Eastern Washington into a back-court violation. Although the Eagles beat the pressure, Creighton's defensive tenacity forced a turnover late in the shot clock.
With 31.2 seconds remaining Creighton used a timeout to advance the ball and allow head coach Jim Flanery to design a game-tying play. Flanery set the play in motion for Lauren Works to penetrate from the right wing. Works pump faked her defender from one step beyond the arc, then raced to the rack for the tying layup with 23 seconds left.
Eastern Washington choose not to use a timeout to advance the ball, dribbling to half-court then calling its timeout. Coming out of the break the Bluejays forced Eastern Washington into a five-second violation. With a little more than 11 seconds showing on the clock the Bluejays went to freshman Audrey Faber. This time Eastern Washington's defense stiffened to force overtime.
In the extra period the Bluejays won the tip and scored immediately on a driving layup by sophomore Jade Owens. Followed a Bluejay stop, Faber knocked down two from the charity strip to make it 60-56 (3:03). Owens went on to knock down 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch as the Bluejays held Eastern Washington to just 1-for-6 from the field in overtime.
The game started as a battle of runs with Creighton scoring the first eight points on two three-pointers from senior Marissa Janning and a layup by Faber. Eastern Washington answered with an 18-1 run over the final 6:55 of the first quarter. Trailing 20-11 at the 8:04 mark of period number two, it was the Bluejays turn to take charge. Fueled by five steals from Owens, Creighton reclaimed the lead with 12 consecutive points at 23-20. The Bluejays went on to outscore Eastern Washington 23-9 in the period, getting 19 off of Eagle turnovers.
Down 32-27 at the break, Eastern Washington made the adjustment at the break to take a 44-43 lead into the fourth quarter. Midway through the fourth, Creighton held a 52-48 lead, but an 8-0 Eagle run set up the exciting finish.
Faber led the Bluejays with 21 points, while Lamberty finished with 13. Owens wrapped the contest with seven points, five rebounds and a career-high seven steals.
Eastern Washington got 14 from Mariah Cunningham and 13 from Hayley Hodgins.
The Bluejays return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 as Creighton continues its seven-game road trip at Kansas. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 pm.
