Five Bluejays score in double-figures for Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. -- Maurice Watson Jr. had game-highs with 19 points and six assists to pace five men in double-figures as Creighton Men's Basketball defeated Upper Iowa, 113-77, in an exhibition game on Friday night before 15,015 fans at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
Creighton led 52-37 at the half and turned it up a notch in the second half, outscoring the Peacocks 61-40, while winning its 15th straight exhibition contest. It was the most points in a fall exhibition game for Creighton since 2005, when it scored 116 vs. Nebraska-Kearney.
Besides Watson's 19 points, Toby Hegner had 13, Malik Albert 12, Isaiah Zierden 11 and Khyri Thomas 10 points. Thomas, an Omaha Benson product who spent last year at Fork Union Military Academy, became CU's first true freshman to start the team's first fall exhibition game since Latrell Wrightsell in 1988. Eight newcomers who have yet to appear in a regular-season game with the Bluejays combined for 68 points and 16 rebounds making 23-of-35 shots from the floor.
Creighton shot 58.8 percent for the game, sinking 40 field goals in the a game that was played at breakneck speed and featured 82 possessions.
The Bluejays sank 13-of-25 three-pointers and had 20 assists compared to just nine turnovers. Creighton owned a 25-4 lead in fast break points and outscored UIU 70-36 off the bench.
Upper Iowa was led by 19 points from Jimmy Roth, who needed just 19 minutes to do so Dennis Austin III added 12 points off the bench for the Peacocks, a Division II team out of Fayette, Iowa. Upper Iowa is coached by Brooks McKowen, a former player at Northern Iowa when current Creighton coach Greg McDermott led the Panthers.
Creighton will open the regular-season next Saturday night at 8:37 pm when it hosts Texas Southern in a game televised nationally on FOX Sports 2.
