Jackrabbits hold CU without a field goal in final 5:21
OMAHA, Neb. -- South Dakota State held Creighton without a field goal over the final 5:21 and escaped D.J. Sokol Arena with a 53-51 win in women's basketball action on Saturday evening in Omaha.
The Jackrabbits improved to 8-2 on the season with their first win in four tries in Omaha, while Creighton dropped to 4-6 with a fourth consecutive loss.
SDSU scored the game's first four points before Creighton rallied to take an 11-8 lead by the end of the first quarter, and 24-22 lead into the break. CU led by as much as 24-16 in the final two minutes of the second period before the Jackrabbits closed the period with a 6-0 run to draw within two. Jade Owens made 6-of-7 field goals and had a career-high 14 points at the break for CU, carrying the load for the Jays.
SDSU kept up the pressure to open the second half, retaking the lead in just over two minutes on a backdoor lay-up by Ellie Thompson. The run extended into a 16-2 surge that gave the Jacks a 32-26 lead before Creighton's leading scorer Audrey Faber finally cracked the scoring column and tied the game with consecutive three-pointers. The game would be tied heading to the fourth quarter at 40-all as CU made 4-of-5 three-pointers in the period.
Lauren Works gave Creighton its final lead of the game with 5:21 left, following her own miss with a lay-in to give the Bluejays a 47-46 lead. But on the ensuing possession, Ellie Thompson scored off an offensive rebound and SDSU would not trail again. SDSU would add insurance on a three-point play by Clarissa Ober with 2:41 to go, making it 51-47. Creighton would halve the deficit with 2:15 left on two McGrory free throws, only to come up empty on its next two trips. A jumper by Macy Miller with 19.1 ticks left gave SDSU a four-point margin. The teams would trade scoreless trips until Works sank two foul shots with 0.9 seconds left. SDSU then used its final timeout to advance the ball and ran out the clock.
Owens went scoreless in the second half but was the lone Bluejay in double-figures with 14 points on the evening, making 6-of-9 shots from the floor. Works and McGrory each scored nine points for CU, which shot 40.8 percent in the game, and owned an 11-3 edge in bench points.
SDSU was paced by 15 points from Miller, whlie Kerri Young and Thompson both added a dozen points. SDSU shot 44.0 percent for the game and won the rebound battle, 32-30.
Creighton returns to action on Dec. 20 with a visit to Baxter Arena for a road game against Omaha that will begin at 8 pm.
