Bluejay WBB Drops BIG EAST Opener to St. John's, 66-55

Omaha, Neb. - Despite 15 points from sophomore Sydney Lamberty, the Creighton women's basketball team dropped its BIG EAST opener to St. John's 66-55 on Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Following the loss Creighton is 6-7 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's is 10-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
St. John's jumped out on the Bluejays quickly in the opening period, bouncing out to a 12-4 edge with 4:47 left. The Red Storm closed the quarter with a 19-12 advantage and held a 26-17 lead with 4:40 left in the second period.
The Bluejays rallied down the stretch of the second quarter, outscoring St. John's 8-2 down the stretch. Sophomore Bailey Norby got the Bluejays going with a 15-foot jumper from the left wing, then Lamberty knocked a trifecta from the extended wing to make it 26-22 (2:35). Following a Red Storm running layup by Aaliyah Lewis, junior Lauren Works drained a trey from the right corner to send the Bluejays into halftime down just three (28-25) at the break.
Lamberty started to shine in the opening moments of the second half, scoring the Bluejays' first three buckets to propel Creighton to its first lead since the opening moments at 31-30 (6:10). Down 36-33 moments later the Bluejays surged out to its largest lead of the game with a quick 7-0 burst. Sophomore Kylie Brown dropped in a 12-footer to get things going, Lamberty followed with a running jumper and MC McGrory capped the run by draining a trey from the top of the key to put the Bluejays up 40-36 (2:55).
The fourth quarter, however, belonged to the Red Storm as St. John's used a 13-0 run to take control, 56-45 (3:28).
Lamberty's 15 points led Creighton, while sophomore Jade Owens finished with 11.
St. John's got 18 points from Lewis and Aliyyah Handford, while Danaejah Grant finished with 17 points.
Creighton returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 31 as the Bluejays host Seton Hall at 1:00 pm
