Lincoln, Neb. - Audrey Faber's 22 point performance brought the Creighton women's basketball team to the brink of an upset, but Nebraska had just enough to hold off the Bluejays 65-63 on Sunday, Dec. 6.
The loss dropped Creighton to 4-4 on the season, while Nebraska moved to 6-1 overall.
The Bluejays' came out of the gate as hot as could be scoring 33 points in the opening period. Three-point shooting was the key as Creighton knocked down eight of its first nine, including three long range bombs from Faber. Five different Bluejays connected from long distance in the opening ten minutes of play, giving Creighton a 33-16 after one.
Early in the second quarter the Bluejays pushed their lead out to 21 points (37-16 with 8:21 left), opening the frame with back-to-back jumpers from sophomore Jade Owens. The Huskers responded with four straight themselves, but Creighton answered with buckets from sophomore Bailey Norby and Faber to get it back to 21 at 41-20 (5:18). Nebraska closed the half on a 12-2 run, capped by a three-pointer banked in at the buzzer to make it a 43-32 contest at the half.
After the Huskers got the opening bucket of the second half, the Bluejays started to pull away once more with seven straight. Faber drilled a three-ball to start the rally. She followed with a driving layup, then junior MC McGrory sank a pull-up jumper to give Creighton a 50-36 lead with 7:22 left.
Following a timeout from Nebraska head coach Connie Yori, the Huskers scored 10 of the next 12. Creighton, however, converted the final bucket of the quarter to send the contest to the fourth with the Bluejays up 54-46.
Throughout the final period of play it was Nebraska applying pressure, with the Bluejays fending off their arch rival. With under two minutes remaining Nebraska got another three-pointer from Theriot to take its first lead since early in the opening quarter at 64-62 (1:35). The Bluejays got a couple of looks in the closing moments, but came up a little short.
Faber's 22-point effort led all scorers, while MC McGrory finished with 13 points. Nebraska got 19 from Jessica Shepard, 17 from Theriot and 13 from Natalie Romero.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 9 as the Bluejays complete their seven-game road trip at Utah. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm (CT).
