Salt Lake City, Utah - Despite a career-high 24 points from junior MC McGrory the Creighton women's basketball team suffered its third straight loss, 72-58, at Utah on Dec. 9.
The loss dropped Creighton to 4-5 on the season, while Utah moved to 5-2 overall.
The Bluejays bounced out to an early 8-0 lead, getting a running layup from McGrory, a trey from freshman Audrey Faber and a three-ball by McGrory in the opening two minutes. Utah fought back within four at 10-6, but Creighton pushed its lead to double-digits in the closing moments of the first quarter as junior Lauren Works knocked down a trifecta from the right corner to send the teams to the break with the Bluejays up 20-10.
Early in the second period the Bluejays pushed their lead to its largest margin, 13 points, at 27-14 (8:07) behind back-to-back buckets from sophomore Bailey Norby. The Utes, however, scored the next 10 points and closed within one at 33-32 by halftime.
The third period saw the Bluejays blast ahead once more, 42-35, with a 9-3 run in the opening three minutes. McGrory was the catalyst with five points. As basketball games often go, the next run belonged to the Utes. This time Utah used an 11-0 burst to take its first lead of the game (46-42). Moments later the Bluejays pulled even behind consecutive buckets from sophomore Sydney Lamberty, but Utah center Emily Potter proved too much down the stretch. Potter finished with 28 points and 19 rebounds to lead both categories, helping the Utes pull away in the fourth quarter.
McGrory finished the game 9-of-10 from the field, hitting her first nine shots, but was double-teamed throughout the fourth period. Faber reached double-figures for the eighth time this season with 11 points.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 12 as the Bluejays return home to face South Dakota State at 7:00 pm.
