Bluejays never trail in 83-67 win
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton surged to an 18-4 lead in the opening minutes and never trailed in an 83-67 win over Nebraska on Wednesday. It was Creighton's fifth straight double-figure win over Nebraska, and 10th straight regular-season home win against its I-80 rival.
Creighton is now 6-3, while Nebraska is 6-4. The win improved Creighton coach Greg McDermott to 12-0 all-time against Tim Miles, including nine double-digit wins over his longtime coaching friend. The two have met while coaching against each other at three different schools, and Miles replaced McDermott at North Dakota State in 2001.
Isaiah Zierden had 17 points while Geoffrey Groselle scored 11 of his 15 points after the half. Maurice Watson Jr. added 14 points for CU.
Andrew White led Nebraska with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
Zierden overcame an 0-for-7 game in Saturday's loss at Loyola (Chicago) with a hot hand from the outset. The junior guard scored five points as CU raced to a 7-0 lead, and converted a three-point play to reach double-digits after just seven minutes to make it 18-4. Helping to facilitate the quick start was freshman Khyri Thomas. The Omaha native had five assists in the first 14 minutes, matching his season total, and flirted with a triple-double before tallying seven points, seven assists and nine rebounds in 22 minutes.
Nebraska would trim Creighton's margin down to 36-30 by half and opened the second half with a lay-up from White to get within four, but would get no closer. Creighton put together a 16-2 run to bury the Cornhuskers for good. Groselle had three baskets in that span, which also included treys from Zierden and Toby Hegner. NU never got closer than 14 the rest of the evening.
Creighton shot 51.9 percent from the field and made 21-of-34 free throws, including 15-of-23 in the second half as the Cornhuskers elected to extend the game with nine fouls in the final 2:38 of the double-digit game. Creighton also won the rebound battle 40-36, outscored NU off the bench 26-8, and dished 17 assists.
In addition to White's 28 points, Tai Webster scored 15 points. Shavon Shields was held to six points on 3-of-8 shooting. NU shot 39.7 percent for the game and just 19.0 percent from three-point range.
Creighton continues play on Saturday at 4:01 pm with a home game against IUPUI that will air nationally on FOX Sports 1.
