NEW YORK – Creighton men's tennis senior Elliott Baker was tabbed the BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Last Friday while playing at No. 5 singles, Elliot Baker helped Creighton to a 7-0 win over North Dakota. Baker defeated UND's Simon Danyluk, 6-0, 7-6, to clinch the team's match point at 4-0. Earlier in the match he paired up with sophomore Jake Norman to win 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
The Des Moines, Iowa native leads the team with a 6-1 singles record this season. Baker and Norman also boast a 5-2 mark at No. 1 doubles in 2015.
The award marks the first league award for the fourth-year player. The BIG EAST weekly laurel is the first secured by a Creighton men's player since departed senior Billy Paluch earned recognition from the conference last season on April 1.
The Jays' win over North Dakota gave head coach Tom Lilly win No. 347 to tie him for the lead in all-time career wins at Creighton with former CU coach Ed Hubbs. The women's team helped Lilly break the record a day later with a 7-0 victory over Hastings.
The Bluejays are 3-0 at home this season and have lost just one point in the trio of matches at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
Creighton travels to No. 61 Nebraska for its next match on Saturday.
