
Women?s Tennis Falls to St. John?s in BIG EAST Opener

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team fell 7-0 to St. John's in the Bluejays' BIG EAST opener at the Hanscom Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
Creighton (4-8, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped its first conference match of the season to St. John's (6-3, 2-0 BIG EAST).
The Red Storm opened the day by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
St. John's later swept all of the singles matches to not surrender a point to Creighton.
Three Bluejays pushed their Red Storm opponent to three sets.
Senior Liz Vermillion traded a trio of 6-2 sets with her opponent at the No. 6 spot. Vermillion dropped the first set but bounced back to win the second stanza before a downfall in the deciding set.
At No. 4 singles freshman Natalie Miller won the first set 7-6 but dropped the second stanza 6-4 before falling 6-0 in the third.
In the final match of the day on court one, senior Jennie Hartjes moved out in front 7-5 in the first stanza but fell in a tight 6-4 setback in set two. SJU came up with a 6-2 decision in the deciding set to earn the final point.
Creighton completes a three-match homestand when it hosts former conference rival Missouri State at 7 p.m. CT Friday.
