Men's Tennis Tops Western Illinois; Falls to Gonzaga this Weekend

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team defeated Western Illinois at home this weekend before falling to Gonzaga at a neutral-site match in Des Moines.
Creighton (4-1) posted a 6-1 defeat of Western Illinois (0-4) in its home opener at Hanscom Tennis Center on Saturday to begin the season with four straight victories. Gonzaga was too much for Creighton on Sunday, pulling away with a 7-0 victory at Drake's Knapp Tennis Center.
CU swept all three doubles contests from WIU. The Bluejays went on to win five of six singles matches in straight sets against the Leathernecks, including three double-bagel victories.
In doubles action, sophomore Jake Norman and senior Elliott Baker earned a 7-6 victory on court one. At No. 2 doubles, juniors Quinn Dippel and Nick Thompson posted a 6-0 win. Freshman Alex Koca and junior August Nysted also won 6-0 on court three.
Koca, Lang and Baker did not surrender a single game in straight set wins at positions three, four and five, respectively. Dippel also won in straight sets on court two while sophomore Aaron Chalstrom won by default at No. 6 singles.
Against Gonzaga, Koca and Nysted earned a 6-1 doubles victory on court three. Koca also pushed his Bulldog singles opponent to a third set on court three before falling 10-7 in the superbreaker. GU swept the other matches in straight sets to claim the victory.
Creighton entertains Hastings at home on Saturday Feb. 14.
