KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Creighton men's tennis team toppled Lehigh at the Star Island Resort in suburban Orlando on Tuesday afternoon.
Creighton (8-2) claimed the doubles point against Lehigh (6-4) and then went on to win five of six singles matches, including four decisions in straight sets to record the win. The Jays victory is impressive give the fact that the Mountain Hawks are two years removed from their first NCAA appearance in 2013 as the Patriot League champions.
The Bluejays opened doubles play with an 8-4 victory on court two by junior August Nysted and freshman Alex Koca. Junior Nick Thompson and sophomore Harrison Lang wrapped up the point with an 8-7 win at No. 3 doubles. Senior Elliott Baker and sophomore Jake Norman did not finish their match but did lead 7-5 before the first point was decided.
Norman and Baker finished with similar winning scores, surrendering just five games each in straight set wins on courts one and five, respectively. Dippel and Lang went extra games in one set but won their matches in straight stanzas at their respective positions of No. 2 and No. 4. Sophomore Aaron Chalstrom scored a three-set win on court six of 6-2, 1-6, 10-3.
Lehigh's lone point came on court three.
Creighton continues play in Orlando this week with three more matches in the Sunshine State.
