Defending Morrison Stadium:
Coming into the 2015 season, head coach Ross Paule made a point to his Bluejay squad that defending Morrison Stadium was one of the first steps to success. Creighton has responded by opening the 2015 season with three home victories, the Bluejays face two more this weekend local rivals Omaha and South Dakota State come calling. Creighton holds a combined 14-1-1 edge on the two opponents this weekend.
Series History:
Creighton leads Omaha, 5-1-0
The Bluejays and Mavericks have met six times prior to Friday's contest with Creighton holding a 5-1-0 edge. The two squads have met during each of the last three seasons, with the Bluejays besting UNO each time. Last season Creighton needed a late comeback as Lauren Sullivan delivered the game-tying goal in the 89th minute and sealed the win in double overtime. Omaha's lone victory in the series came in 2002 (2-0). The Bluejays are a perfect 3-0-0 in matches against the Mavericks in Morrison Stadium.
Creighton leads South Dakota State, 9-0-1
Continuing a series that began in 2007, the Bluejays will look to extend their three match winning streak against the Jackrabbits. Scouting Creighton (3-1-0):
Amazingly we have already completed one-fifth (20%) of the regular season prior to kickoff on Friday. With two victories last weekend, the Bluejays are pleased with the start to the Ross Paule era. Creighton, however, will get another test as Omaha and South Dakota State enter Morrison Stadium.
Last season the Mavericks were less than 100 seconds from claiming a win over the Bluejays.
Creighton will offer a very different look this season as Paule's style of offense will spread out the Mavericks.
In goal the Bluejays are continuing to see freshman Erin Scott grow. Scott did not allow a goal in 171:27 last weekend. The Texan has not allowed a goal in over 261 minutes at Morrison Stadium.
Offensively the Bluejays posted four goals in the second half against Northern Illinois. Seven different players have at least one point for Creighton in 2015, led by four points by Ylenia Sachau.
Scouting Omaha (1-1-1):
The Mavericks enter Friday's contest following a 2-1 win over Northern Illinois last Sunday. Omaha dropped its season opener at Iowa (4-0) and
recorded a 1-1 against Northern Iowa on Aug. 28.
Former Bluejay Kyla Booker is one of three Mavericks tied for the team lead with one goal. Booker provided the Mavericks' lone goal against Creighton last season.
Defensively the Mavericks has split their goalkeeping duties. Junior Haley Shelton has 14 saves in 244 minutes, but sophomore Katlyn Schochenmaier earned the win over Northern Illinois with 46:17 of scoreless play last Sunday. Shelton played the entire match against the Bluejays last season.
Scouting South Dakota State (2-1-0):
After playing 20 minutes against Iowa last Friday, the Jackrabbits saw their match with the Hawkeyes postponed by inclement weather. The extra rest proved useful two days later as SDSU defeated Drake 2-1.
Madison Yueill leads the Jackrabbit offense in the early season with two goals. Yueill broke a 1-1 tie with Drake in the 52nd minute as she delivered the game-winning goal on a penalty kick. Both of her goals this season have come via the PK.
Junior Nicole Inskeep returns to the net for South Dakota State. She has allowed just three goals in three matches, recording 20 saves. Inskeep nabbed 11 saves in the win over Drake.
Scott Follows Honor Roll with BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Honor:
After earning a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll following her first week of play, Erin Scott raised the bar by nabbing the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honor on Aug. 31.
Scott went 2-0-0 last weekend, including a 1-0 shutout victory over Central Michigan on Sunday. The rookie totaled just over 171 minutes in net over the two tilts, making 13 saves, including a career-high seven stops against CMU.
The Dallas, Texas, native made six saves against Northern Illinois on Friday, playing 81:27 shutout minutes. She has not allowed a goal in just over 261 minutes at Morrison Stadium thus far.
Salazar's Moment to Shine:
One of Creighton's three captains, senior goalkeeper Kyla Salazar saw action for the first time Friday, Aug. 28 against Northern Illinois. Salazar played 8:33 against the Huskies, recording one save.
Paule Becomes Fourth Bluejay Head Coach to open 3-1-0:
