OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball outside hitter Jaali Winters has been named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week.
Hailing from Ankeny, Iowa, Winters averaged 3.73 kills, 1.36 digs and 0.27 blocks per set while hitting .297 as Creighton went 2-1 last weekend. Winters led Creighton in kills during all three matches en route to the first All-Tournament accolades of her young career.
Winters had 10 kills, three digs and two blocks in a 3-0 sweep of Lipscomb on Friday, a team that was receiving votes in the Top 25 poll.
On Saturday, she had season-bests with 18 kills on .424 hitting while adding three digs and an ace in a 3-1 win over defending WAC champion CSU Bakersfield. She followed that up with 13 kills and nine digs against Pacific, hitting .222.
Winters surpassed 100 career kills in fewer matches (9) than any Bluejay in more than 20 years to help earn her first career BIG EAST accolade.
Creighton (4-5) hosts four matches this week, all against one-loss teams. The stretch begins on Tuesday night when CU hosts No. 4 Nebraska (7-1) in a 7 pm match at CenturyLink Center Omaha. This weekend the program will host the Creighton Classic, which includes Arkansas, Kansas State and No. 11 Wisconsin.
