Volleyball Serves Up Another Winner In 3-1 Victory Over Villanova

OMAHA, Neb. -- Jaali Winters had 23 kills and Creighton served up a season-high nine aces as the Bluejays capped off a 2-0 start to BIG EAST play with a 3-1 win over Villanova on Sunday afternoon.
Scores of the match were 25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-13.
Creighton improved to 8-7 (2-0 BIG EAST) while wrapping up a program-record nine-match homestand. Villanova had an eight-match win streak snapped to drop to 11-4 (1-1 BIG EAST).
The first set saw Creighton get two extended serving runs from setter Maggie Baumert, and continued excellence from Winters. Baumert's first spurt was a 5-0 blast that gave CU the lead for good at 8-4. Later, with CU leading 18-16 Baumert served up five more points in a row, including an ace, to put the Jays in control. Villanova saved two set points to draw within one at 24-23 before a kill from Taryn Kloth closed out the set. Baumert had 10 assists and nine digs in her first start in 12 days, while Winters pounded 10 kills in the opening frame.
Villanova turned the tables on Creighton in the second set, winning a 25-17 decision to even the match at 1-1 heading into intermission. BIG EAST assist leader Emma Pettit dished 14 assists in the second set, matching the number of kills that Villanova had all last season in a trip to D.J. Sokol Arena.
Creighton never trailed in either of the last two sets, racing to big leads in both. The third set saw Ashley Jansen propel CU to a 4-0 lead that later grew as large as 16-10. The Wildcats fought back to draw within two at 21-19 before Kate Elman served out a run to close out the set, which was capped by two more kills from Winters.
The Bluejays elected to ride the hot hand of Elman to open the fourth set behind the service line, and the senior libero came through. She served up a 5-0 lead, including two aces, as the Jays remained in control. With CU leading 13-7 later in the set, Elman once again served up consecutive aces. Lizzy Stivers added her first ace of the season later in the set, and Winters closed out the match with her 23rd kill of the day.
One week after posting a career-high 25 kills last Sunday in a win over Kansas State, Winters had another big Sunday with 23 kills while adding 11 digs for the double-double. Baumert had 43 assists and 13 digs for her first double-double of the fall, setting CU to a .248 attack percentage. Others to reach double-figures on Sunday included Lauren Smith with 12 kills on .409 hitting and a match-high five blocks and CU's senior-laden back row of Elman (15 digs), Melanie Jereb (14 digs) and Ashley Jansen (12 digs).
Claire Crutchfield and Amanda Pedersen-Henry each posted 12 kills for Villanova, with Pedersen-Henry also hitting .385. Villanova's kill leader entering the day, Allie Loitz, was held to nine kills on .179 hitting, though she did provide three aces. In addition, 'Nova libero Allison Fitzgerald led all players with 22 digs.
Creighton won nearly every statistical category, including kills (55-45), aces (9-7), digs (73-58) and hitting percentage (.248 - .166). Both teams had eight blocks.
The Bluejays will hit the road this weekend when it travels to meet St. John's on Friday at 6 pm Central and Providence on Saturday at 4 pm.
