OMAHA, Neb. -- Myles Englis's goal with 1:45 to play was the difference as third-ranked Creighton Men's Soccer overcame an early deficit to rally and defeat CSUN on Friday night before 4,907 fans at Morrison Stadium, 2-1.
Creighton is now 3-0-0 and has won 17 straight games vs. teams from California, while CSUN dropped to 1-1-0.
In front of a spirited Socctoberfest crowd, Creighton dominated play all night long with one exception. CSUN scored its lone goal of the night just 91 seconds into the game as Papi Diouf overpowered a pair of defenders to force Creighton goalkeeper Connor Sparrow off his line, and Diouf would feed an open Steven Manios who had a clean look from six yards out.
That would be CSUN's only shot of the night, as Creighton would fire the game's final 14 attempts.
Creighton's first goal came with 32:27 to play. Vincent Keller's long ball sailed over the Matador defense and found the head of Fabian Herbers, who then needed one touch to redirect a pass to a streaking Ricky Lopez-Espin just inside the box. Lopez-Espin would beat a flat-footed CSUN keeper Adam Hobbs with a left-footed strike to even the match at 1-1.
Englis scored for the second straight game for his first career game-winning goal. After a corner kick, Lucas Stauffer would gain control, deke a defender and unleash a shot that found the right post. Englis was there to collect the ricochet just inside the spot and bounce a hard shot off Hobbs, giving CU a 2-1 lead.
The game was chippy down the stretch as CSUN was issued three cards in the final four minutes, including a red card to Stuart Close with 15.9 seconds left led to his ejection.
Creighton will host No. 13 UC Irvine (1-1-0) on Sunday night at 7 pm.
