Women's Cross Country Finishes Sixth at Chile Pepper Festival

Bluejays run well in a large field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Emily Martin ran the second-best 5K time in school history to lead the Creighton women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.
Martin took 18th place in the field of 254 collegiate competitors, with a time of 17:14.3 over the University of Arkansas Cross Country Course that measured 5,000 meters. In school history, only Lauren Ogg's time of 17:05 last fall at this same meet has been better.
Vanessa Miller was Creighton's second-best finisher, taking 42nd place with a time of 17:37.53 that ranks fifth on the program's all-time best list. It was 50 seconds better than her previous 5K best as a Bluejay.
Megan Paule raced to a 69th-place finish with a time of 17:43.25, while Grace Mimmack (98th with a time of 17:48.76) and Alexis Altmaier (159th with a time of 18:32.02) also counted towards CU's team score.
Missouri's Karissa Schweizer won the race by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 16:09.83, topping Arkansas' Devin Clark's 16:19.36.
Arkansas won its home meet with a score of 22, well ahead of Missouri's 72. TCU (127), Wichita State (134) and Samford (156) also finished ahead of Creighton in the race that featured 18 Division I teams.
Creighton returns to action in Peoria, Ill., on Oct. 14 for the Bradley Pink Classic.
