Women's Tennis Picks Up Three Championships At Bluejay Invitational

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team picked up three championships at the Bluejay Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Claire Embree and Simone Hussussian each earned individual championships in their respective flights, while Hussussian and Kendra Lavallee teamed up for the Flight C Doubles crown.
Embree earned the Flight D Singles championship with a pair of victories on Saturday. The sophomore dropped her first set in the semifinal round 3-6, but rallied for a pair of 6-3 set wins over South Dakota's Hannah Wich to advance to the finals. Embree defeated Alex Revenig (North Dakota) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to win the title.
Hussussian picked up two straight-set victories to earn the Flight F singles crown. The senior defeated a Doane opponent 6-0, 6-0 before picking up a 6-2, 7-6 win over North Dakota's Courtney Brackin for the championship.
Hussussian and Lavallee defeated North Dakota's Aliza Deming and Brackin 6-2 in the Doubles Flight C finals to earn the crown. The Bluejay pair finished 3-0 over the two-day event.
Ashley Ishimura and Michaela Henne each split their two singles matches in Flight A. Both fell in their respective semifinal matches before rallying to pick up straight-set wins in their second matches of the day.
Darby Rosette reached the Singles Flight B finals following a straight-set win in the semifinal round. In the finals, Rosette won the first set, before dropping the final two to Faith Lee (North Dakota), and finished runner-up.
Katherine Nelsen advanced to the Singles Flight C championship, and fell in a tightly contested three-set match against Mimi Yunker (North Dakota). Yunker won the opening set 6-3, but Nelsen took a 6-0 decision in the second. In the deciding game, Yunker pulled out a 7-6 victory for the championship.
In Flight E singles, Lavallee finished Saturday 1-1. The freshman fell in straight-sets to Kenzie Hill (Nebraska-Omaha), but flipped the card to earn a straight-set victory over Zorka Sara Sviban (South Dakota State) in the third-place match.
In Flight A doubles action, the duos of Ishimura and Rosette and Henne and Nelsen each teamed up to give the Bluejays a pair of doubles victories.
"It was a great job by Simone and Kendra wining their doubles flight, playing well together," coach Tom Lilly said. "It was also nice to see the other doubles teams regroup and play well today to get some wins.Â
"Simone and Claire did a great job winning their singles flights in singles and we competed well throughout the tournament. It was definitely another step in the right direction."
