Creighton trails just once all day in the sweep
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton hit a resounding .408 -- seventh-best in program history -- in a convincing 3-0 victory over Seton Hall on Sunday in the program's 10th Annual Pink Out. Scores of the match in favor of CU were 25-10, 25-15, 25-18.
Creighton's eighth straight win lifted the Bluejays to 14-6 on the season and 8-0 in the BIG EAST standings, which is good for a two-game lead in the loss column over second-place Marquette. Seton Hall dropped to 10-12 overall and is 4-5 in league play to stand in a tie for sixth place. Creighton now owns 13 straight regular-season conference wins at D.J. Sokol Arena since a Seton Hall victory over the Bluejays in 2014.
Megan Ballenger had a kill on the first point of the match, then served a 9-0 run featuring two aces that gave Creighton a 10-0 lead out of the gates. Creighton hit .438 in the opening set, with Lydia Dimke distributing 11 assists and calling her own number on three occasions. Dimke was one of six Bluejays with multiple kills in the first frame, while Ballenger served two more times (13) than Seton Hall did (11) in the set.
After Seton Hall took its only lead of the afternoon at 1-0 in the second set, Ballenger served the Bluejays into a 4-1 lead and they would not look back. Marysa Wilkinson had a hand in three consecutive blocks late in the second set to help CU take a 21-14 lead, and a kill from Brittany Lawrence closed out the second frame. Creighton managed six blocks in the second set as part of an effort that saw CU outblock the Pirates 13-3 for the match.
Jess Bird provided a spark in the third set, putting down seven kills in 11 swings as the Jays closed out the sweep with a 25-18 triumph. Her seven kills tied a personal high this season for any set, and helped CU hit .455 in the finale. Creighton sided out all 18 times Seton Hall served in the clincher, including a Haylee Gasser service error on match point.
Wilkinson led Creighton with nine kills and six blocks while hitting .667 on the afternoon. She was one of five Bluejays with seven or more kills on the day, as seven CU players had between 10-18 attack attempts. Brittany Witt led CU with nine digs, while Ballenger collected two of CU's three aces. Dimke finished with 38 assists in yet another offensive masterpiece.
Creighton finished with 48 kills, three aces, 44 digs and 13 blocks on .408 hitting, while Seton Hall had 31 kills, one ace, 36 digs and three blocks on .093 hitting. Dominique Mason had 10 kills, while two-time BIG EAST Libero of the Year Tessa Fournier dug a match-high 12 balls.
Creighton wore its alternate white, pink and gray jerseys as part of the program's annual Pink Out, which drew 1,671 fans.
Creighton returns to action on Friday at 7 pm when it plays at third-place DePaul (11-10, 5-4 BIG EAST).
