Creighton tops DePaul for the eighth straight time
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Three players had double-figure kills to lead Creighton Volleyball to its ninth straight win, a 3-0 victory at DePaul on Friday night. Scores of the match were 25-23, 25-23, 25-19.
Creighton improved to 15-6 on the season and is now 9-0 in BIG EAST play. DePaul dropped to 11-11 and is 5-5 in BIG EAST play after its fourth straight loss.
"I'm pleased to get a sweep on the road against a good DePaul team," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "DePaul came out with a game plan to serve aggressive and did a good job with that. In the first set DePaul had huge run after we went up 20-12 and I'm disappointed it got closer than it should have. We have to clean up our unforced errors to be successful tomorrow night, but we got our rhythm in game 3. We talked about it at halftime, and played better, and hopefully we can keep our mojo a little bit to get ready for a dogfight tomorrow night at Marquette."
Creighton took a 2-0 lead in the match with identical 25-23 victories before intermission.
The first set saw DePaul nearly rally from an eight-point deficit, drawing within one point at 24-23 before a Marysa Wilkinson putaway to clinch the set point. Lydia Dimke dished 12 assists, including four to Wilkinson, and the Bluejays served up four aces.
The second set featured a similar pattern. Creighton led 19-15 before the Blue Demons rallied to knot the score at 22-all. But CU pulled away with three of the final four points, including a Megan Ballenger kill on set point.
The Bluejays never trailed in the third set en route to its first road sweep of the Blue Demons. Lauren Smith broke open a close match with a 6-0 serving run to grow the lead to 15-7. A kill from Taryn Kloth closed out the victory, CU hit a robust .486 in the final set, including seven kills by Kloth and six more from Jaali Winters. Dimke distributed 14 assists as part of her match-high 34 overall.
Creighton hit .295 and finished with 47 kills, six aces, 37 digs and six blocks. Kloth owned a match-best 12 kills, with Winters and Wilkinson chipping in with 10 each. Megan Ballenger and Brittany Witt both added two aces.
Myah Reed and Jasmine King each finished with 10 kills for the Blue Demons, who recorded 35 kills, four aces, 32 digs and four blocks on .227 hitting.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 6 pm Central with a match at second-place Marquette.
