Creighton posts second sweep over Seton Hall in 13 days
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Big nights from Lydia Dimke, Brittany Witt and Taryn Kloth helped the Creighton Volleyball team to a 3-0 win at Seton Hall on Friday night. Scores of the match were 25-16, 25-18, 25-12.
The victory, Creighton's 11th straight, improved the Bluejays to 17-6 on the year and 11-0 in BIG EAST action. The 11-match win streak is tied for CU's third-longest win streak in program history, while the seven-match road win streak is one shy of the mark of eight set in 2012. Seton Hall, which has handed Creighton three of its seven all-time BIG EAST losses, dropped to 11-14, 5-7 in league play.
Creighton dropped the first two points for its only deficit of the night but quickly rebounded to score the next six points and extend that lead to 12-6, 18-10 and eventually 25-16. Creighton's offense overwhelmed the host Pirates, as CU had 20 kills and hit .372. Dimke dished 18 assists, while Witt added eight digs in the first set.
CU never trailed in the second set, taking an early 5-0 lead and eventually extending that margin to 19-10. The Pirates put a scare into the Bluejays with seven straight points to draw within two, only to see CU answer with the next three points. A kill from Marysa Wilkinson ended the run, and Megan Ballenger followed with consecutive blocks. Kloth led CU with 11 kills and four blocks at the break, which saw CU hitting .356 through two sets.
The Bluejays continued its dominance in the third set with a 25-12 victory capped off by a Jaali Winters ace. The ace was one of five service winners on the evening. Three of those aces came from senior Lauren Smith, who entered the night with two total aces in her first 124 career matches.
"I thought our defense was really good and I thought our blocking really disrupted them," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "We talked about Seton Hall as a team that will try to beat you at the seam, so we keyed on trying to put a good strong block together. It was one of our best nights protecting the seam, so that was good to see. We always talk about how our offense is going to come, but we have to win games doing other things, and I thought our defense was that tonight."
Kloth finished with 12 kills and a season-best five blocks, while Witt had 17 digs and six assists. Dimke added 37 assists and nine digs while setting her team to .360 hitting. CU finished with 46 kills, five aces, 55 digs and 11 blocks.
Seton Hall hit .035 on the night with 25 kills, 40 digs, two blocks and one ace. Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Abby Thelen was limited to eight kills in 35 attacks, while two-time reigning BIG EAST Libero of the Year Tessa Fournier had a season-low eight digs, which was still good enough to lead the Pirates.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match at St. John's that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
