Creighton hits .346 in convincing sweep
QUEENS, N.Y. -- The Creighton Volleyball team closed out a grueling October with its 12th straight win, this time a 3-0 sweep at St. John's on Saturday afternoon. Creighton trailed just once in the match, which it won by scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-18.
Creighton improved to 18-6 on the fall with its seventh straight victory in the series against the Red Storm. Creighton's 12-0 BIG EAST mark is the program's best to start league play in program history. St. John's fell to 13-13 and is 4-9 in league play.
"I think this was the hardest conference scheduling that a Creighton team has had in my 14 years," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "The fact that we were on the road in October four of five weeks is grueling. Championships are often won in October. For us to come out unblemished is impressive and tells you about the poise, maturity and mental toughness of this group."
The victory closed out a 9-0 record in October that saw the Bluejays drop just 2-of-29 sets played. It's just the second unbeaten October in program history, joining the 2012 team that went 7-0 en route to a 29-4 overall record.
Marysa Wilkinson and Taryn Kloth paced Creighton on Saturday with 11 kills each. Wilkinson hit .500 and added four blocks, and fellow middle blocker Lauren Smith added nine kills and four blocks on .412 hitting. Freshman Megan Ballenger also had a big match, hitting .727 with nine kills, five digs and a career-high seven blocks.
Creighton hit .346 in the contest, adding six aces, 49 digs and 10 blocks. The team's 12th straight win is tied for the program's second-longest win streak in school history, and improved CU to 49-3 in its last 52 matches against BIG EAST teams. The victory was also Creighton's school-record 14th sweep of 2016.
"We're thrilled to get a road win," noted Booth. "I thought our offense was pretty good but I was disappointed with our passing. We didn't get in system like I thought we should. I was pleased that we had six aces but still feel like we missed too many serves."
St. John's finished 28 kills, five aces, 33 digs and 4.5 blocks on .097 hitting. The Red Storm were led by 10 kills from Julia Cast, while Erica Di Maulo dished 24 assists and led the Red Storm with three aces and three blocks.
Creighton will close out the regular-season with six straight home matches, starting next Friday with a 6 pm contest against Butler.
