Creighton still up for at-large selection in NCAA Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS – No. 15 Butler defeated the Creighton men's soccer team 2-1 for the BIG EAST tournament title on Sunday afternoon at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis.
With the victory, the Bulldogs earned an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament and improved to 13-5-1.
The Bluejays dropped to 11-6-3 and awaits Monday's NCAA Men's Soccer selection show for a possible at-large selection into the NCAA tournament.
No. 24 Creighton had a handful of dangerous opportunities during the first half, but Butler capitalized on a breakaway opportunity late in the first half to take the lead.
Isaac Galliford out ran the Creighton defense down the left side of the pitch and fired a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box into the opposite back corner of the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead during the 37th minute.
Galliford's shot was Butler's first shot on goal of the match.
David Goldsmith had another opportunity minutes later with a shot at the top of the box, but Alex Kapp made his first save to keep the score at 1-0 at halftime.
The Bulldogs extended the lead with a goal during the 64th minute with a diving header from Eric Leonard. Lewis Suddick sent a ball to David Goldsmith on the left side of the pitch before Goldsmith sent the ball into the box for Leonard.
The 2-0 Butler lead marked only the fifth time Creighton had trailed by two under coach Elmar Bolowich during six seasons.
Three minutes later, Myles Englis cut the deficit in half with his fourth goal during the postseason. Ricardo Perez recovered a ball inside the six-yard box and crossed it across the box to Englis who put the ball into the back of the net to cut the deficit to one with 24 minutes to play.
The Bluejays continued to apply pressure the remainder of the match, but could not find the equalizer.
Kapp finished the afternoon with three saves, while Butler's Eric Dick made six stops.
A total of 47 fouls were called and four yellow cards were issued during the match.
