OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 24 Creighton men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to defeat Xavier, 3-1, in the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep on Sunday at Morrison Stadium.
Â
With the victory, the Bluejays advance to the semifinals and will play at top-seeded and 25th-ranked Providence on Thursday, Nov. 10.Â
Creighton improved to 10-5-3, while Xavier closed BIG EAST postseason play at 8-8-3.
Xavier opened the scoring with a goal on the first shot of the match. Walker Androit notched his first goal of the season during the sixth minute to give the Musketeers a 1-0 advantage. Matt Vasquenza sent a ball from the right side of the 18-yard box to Androit just outside the center of the goal box where he sent the ball into the back left-corner of the net.
During the 25th minute, the Bluejays' first shot nearly tied the match. Ricardo Perez had a free kick opportunity from the edge of the 18-yard box, but Colin Hanley saved the straight-on attempt.
Just as Xavier appeared to hold a lead heading into the break, Myles Englis found the equalizer during the final minute of the first 45. Ricardo Perez streaked down the left side of the pitch and directed a pass from the endline towards the six-yard box where Englis one-touched the ball into the back of the net.
After an evenly played first half, Creighton controlled the second period and held a 17-2 shot advantage.Â
Ricky Lopez-Espin gave the Bluejays a one-goal advantage with his eighth goal of the season on a penalty kick. During the 83rd minute, Englis drew a foul inside the 18-yard box to set up Lopez-Espin's first penalty kick attempt as a Bluejay.Â
Englis sealed the victory with second goal of the match during the final 10 seconds on a long breakaway with the Xavier goalkeeper well off his line. Thursday marked the first multi-goal match of Englis' career.Â
Creighton ended the match with a 23-5 shot advantage and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.Â
Sunday's victory marked the Jays' second BIG EAST postseason victory during four appearances.Â
The Bluejays will now face Providence for the fourth consecutive season in the BIG EAST Championships. The Friars own a 2-1 record against the Jays during BIG EAST postseason play, however, Creighton picked up a 2-1 victory over Providence during the semifinal round last season. All three matches have been decided by one goal.Â
Thursday's match between the Bluejays and Friars will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern in Providence, R.I., and air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
