Cedar Falls, Iowa -- Trailing by one in the closing seconds, the Creighton women's basketball got an open look but just missed as the Bluejays fell to Northern Iowa, 50-49, on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The loss evened Creighton's record at 4-4 on the season, while Northern Iowa moved to 5-4.
Down 5-0 in the opening moments the Bluejays got rolling in the post. Senior Brianna Rollerson scored Creighton's first bucket, then junior Bailey Norby knocked down two from the charity stripe. The next Creighton basked came from the star of the night, freshman Jaylyn Agnew. The Kansas native gave the Bluejays the lead and added a trifecta as the Bluejays rattled off 13 straight to claim a 13-5 edge with 3:33 left in the period. Northern Iowa, however, collected the final four of the period to send the game to the second quarter with Creighton clinging to a 13-9 edge.
Creighton's scoring struggles continued in the second quarter as the Bluejays shot just 1-of-15 from the field (7%), yet maintained a one-point lead at the half at 19-18.
The Panthers opened the second half with another burst to surge in front 23-19 and held a six point advantage at 34-28 with 1:59 remaining in the frame. Agnew went to work in the closing minutes, collecting an offensive rebound and a put back to make it 34-31, then answered a three-ball from Northern Iowa to send the contest to the fourth with the Bluejays down 37-34.
With 3:08 remaining in the contest, Northern Iowa appeared poised to put the game away, up 47-41 with possession. The Bluejays, however, delivered a critical stop and got a trey from junior Sydney Lamberty to make it 47-44. Following another Creighton defensive stand, sophomore Audrey Faber drove the lane for a running layup to bring the Bluejays within one, 47-46 (1:15).
Northern Iowa got a pull-up jumper from ten feet by Mikaela Morgan, but Agnew answered with the game-tying three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining.
The Bluejays were whistled for a foul with just over ten seconds remaining, sending Megan Maas to the charity stripe. The freshman hit one of two, prompting Creighton head coach Jim Flanery to use his final timeout to advance the ball.
The ensuing possession saw the Bluejays got the ball into senior MC McGrory. After a steal by Morgan, the Bluejays were on the wrong end of another whistle as Morgan's momentum from the steal carried her to the floor, yet a foul was called on McGrory.
Morgan missed both free throws, setting up Creighton's final possession. Quickly moving the ball ahead, Lamberty found Agnew open at the top of the key, but the freshman's shot bounced off the rim as time expired.
Agnew led the Bluejays with a career-high 16 points and nine rebounds, while Rollerson finished with 13 points. Northern Iowa got 12 points from Madison Weekly and Maahs.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Dec. 18 as the Bluejays host Nebraska at 2:00 pm in D.J. Sokol Arena. The game will be broadcast in Nebraska on NET (Nebraska Educational Television).
