Volleyball Trio Earn AVCA All-America Honors
12/14/2016 10:08:00 AM | Volleyball
Lydia Dimke, Taryn Kloth and Jaali Winters are honored
Lydia Dimke was named Third Team All-American, while Taryn Kloth and Jaali Winters were both Honorable Mention All-America selections. It's the first such All-America honor for Dimke and Kloth, while Winters becomes the third player in school history to earn multiple All-America honors after being named a Third Team All-American as a freshman in 2015. Megan Bober (2010, 2012) and Kelli Browning (2012, 2013, 2014) are the only previous Bluejays to earn multiple All-America plaudits.
The third-team recognition for Dimke matches the highest individual honor in program history, matching Browning's 2014 award and Winters' 2015 recognition. This is the fourth time in program history that Creighton has had multiple women honored with All-America honors following the same season, joining 2012 (honorable-mention picks Bober and Browning), 2013 (honorable-mention picks Browning and Michelle Sicner) and 2015 (third-team All-American Winters and honorable-mention selection Lauren Smith).
A 6-foot-3 setter from Ham Lake, Minn., Dimke was named BIG EAST Player of the Year in her first season on The Hilltop after transferring in from Purdue in January. Dimke leads the nation with 1,454 assists this season, which ranks second-most in Creighton single-season history. The junior also ranks 12th nationally with a BIG-EAST leading 11.36 assists per set, and helped set CU to a school-record .273 hitting percentage on the year. Dimke's 2.67 digs per set were tops among BIG EAST setters and helped her attain a team-high 17 double-doubles on the fall.
Kloth averaged 3.20 kills per set and hit .277 during her sophomore season. The 6-foot-4 outside hitter from Sioux Falls, S.D., earned First Team All-BIG EAST and All-East Region accolades after a breakthrough campaign that saw her rank in the top-10 in the BIG EAST in kills per set and points per set.
Winters led Creighton with 448 kills (3.61 kps.) and 500.5 points (4.03 pps.), and was second with both 360 digs (2.90 dps.) and 36 service aces (0.29 saps.). The Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year was named BIG EAST Tournament MVP and last week earned a spot on the All-Austin Regional Team.
Each of the three AVCA All-America Teams is comprised of 14 athletes. This marks the second year all players representing the Honorable Mention All-Americans were selected by the selection committee (previously, players who made All-Region were automatically honorable mention if they didn't make one of the three teams). The Division I AVCA National Player of the Year will be announced Friday at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet.
Stanford's Kathryn Plummer was named National Freshman of the Year, an award that Creighton libero Brittany Witt was up for by virtue of her selection as AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year.
Creighton is led by Kirsten Bernthal Booth, the AVCA's East Region Coach of the Year. The AVCA will announce its National Coach of the Year on Thursday at the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon.
Creighton went 29-7 in 2016, making an unprecedented fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance while reaching the Elite Eight for the first time. The campaign included both a BIG EAST regular-season and Tournament title, the third straight season the program has won both.
The selections were made by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee: Chair: Sherry Dunbar, Indiana University; South Region: Karen Weatherington, UNC Charlotte; East Region; Jackie Simpson, George Mason; East Coast Region: Dennis Hohenshelt, Virginia; Midwest Region: Melissa Stokes, Missouri State; North Region: Cathy George, Michigan State; Northeast Region: Ryan Baker, Colgate; Pacific North Region: Shawn Garus, Boise State; Pacific South Region; Beth Launiere, Utah; Southeast Region: Scott Swanson, South Carolina; Southwest Region: Jill Kramer, TCU.
