New York, N.Y. - Creighton Baseball junior Nicky Lopez was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 29th as Lopez led the Bluejays to a series sweep at Stetson last weekend. Senior Matt Warren also earned recognition for his efforts against the Hatters, claiming a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Lopez helped the Bluejays to a 3-0 weekend with a .400 batting average hitting 6-for-15 with two doubles and three RBI. His three-run double gave the Bluejays a 4-1 edge in the series finale with Stetson. The Bluejays were the only team to go undefeated this weekend.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the first on Saturday, Warren rebounded to hold Stetson in cement for the next 4.1. He allowed five hits and one walk in 5.1 for his first win of the season with a 1.69 ERA.
The BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week was Georgetown's Simon Matthews, who struck out the side en route to a 5-3 win for Georgetown at Davidson. Mathews had an impressive stat line for the game with 6.0 innings pitched a 0.00 ERA. He allowed just five hits and three walks and struck out five batters. When Mathews left the game, he had preserved a 2-0 lead for the Hoyas.
Lopez and Warren lead the Bluejays back onto the diamond next weekend as Creighton travels to Kentucky for a three-game series with Murray State beginning on Friday, March 4 at 3:00 pm (CT)
