Omaha, Neb. -- Led by four goals from freshmen, including two from Callie Hawkins, the Creighton women's soccer squad bested Iowa 5-3 on Friday, Aug. 19.
The win gave Creighton a 1-0-0 start to the season, while Iowa fell to 0-1-0. The Bluejays claimed the season opening contest for the third consecutive season.
Both teams took a little time to play into the match as the opening 15 minutes featured just two shots, both by the Bluejays. Despite controlling possession for much of the first 20 minutes, Iowa did not fire off its first shot until the 21st minute of action.
Each of Creighton first four shots forced Iowa goalkeeper Claire Graves to make the save, yet the fourth shot glanced off Graves hands to leave Bluejay junior Darby Hugunin an opening. The South Dakota native seized the opportunity with an unassisted goal from four yards away to make it 1-0.
The Bluejays' second scoring chance was created when senior Lauren Sullivan was pulled down just outside the goal box. Freshman Callie Hawkins made the Hawkeyes pay for their transgressions with an unassisted goal on the free kick to make it 2-0.
The match stayed at 2-0 through halftime, with the Bluejays hold a 6-2 edge in shots at the break.
The second half yielded a definite increase in offense, ignited by a burst from the Hawkeyes. Iowa got on the board in the 48th minute as Rachele Armand drove a goal in from 25 yards out. Iowa set up the score with a corner from the left side. A failed clear attempt by the Bluejays settled in front of Armand, giving her a look at the net.
Just 69 seconds later the Hawkeye knotted the match at 2-2. This Hawkeye tally came on a double assist as Isabella Blackman fed Rose Ripslinger, who one touched the ball to Karly Stunkel for a goal from 30 yards out.
Playing through a steady rain in the second half, the Bluejay offense went back to work in the 57th minute. Creighton reclaimed the lead in the same way Creighton scored its first goal. Hugunin fired a shot blocked by Graves, but Hawkins was there to field the rebound and put away her second goal of the match.
With her second goal in her Creighton debut, Hawkins became the first Bluejay to tally two goals in her first match since Kristina Schoeck accomplished the feat on Aug. 31, 1996 against Oklahoma (a 4-0 Creighton victory).
The future of the Bluejays continued to fire away as freshman Jaylin Bosak headed home a pass from fellow freshman Taryn Jakubowski in the 64th minute to make it 4-2.
Iowa got back within one goal in the 72nd minute as Kaleigh Haus put home a goal from 30 yards away, but Bluejay freshman Hannah Miller put another goal away in the 80th minute. Miller's goal was unassisted, but senior Lauren Sullivan put her in position to score. Sullivan sent a through pass to Miller along the right side to set up a one-on-one with Graves. Miller's first shot was blocked by Graves, yet the Kansas product put home the rebound herself.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 21 as the Bluejays host UMKC at 1:00 pm.
