Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's soccer team looks to bounce back from its first loss of the season as the Bluejays face Kansas State and South Dakota State this weekend.
Series History
Creighton tied with Kansas State, 0-0-0
The 2016 season will be filled with firsts for the Kansas State Wildcats as this is the first year of the program. Kansas State is in the midst of an eight match road trip to open the year. The Wildcats first home match will not come until Sept. 16 (Northern Iowa). Kansas State has already secured its first victory of the season, besting Oakland 6-0 on Aug. 26.
Creighton leads South Dakota State, 9-1-1
The Bluejays and Jackrabbits have played every season but one (2013) since 2004, but the two schools have not played in Brookings since 2011. Creighton holds a 9-1-1 edge on South Dakota State, but fell to the Jackrabbits last season 1-0 at Morrison Stadium (Sept. 6).
Creighton is 4-0 all-time in Brookings, claiming matches in 2005, '07, '09 and '11.
Scouting Kansas State (1-2-1)
With 14 freshman on the squad, Creighton is considered a young team. Kansas State,
however, likely holds the title as the youngest team in the NCAA. The Wildcats boast 22 freshman on their roster of 32. Kansas State does have one senior, Abbey Fisher, who transferred in from Ball State.
The Wildcats are off to a 1-2-1 start, entering Friday's match with seven goals from seven different players. The leading scorer for the Wildcats is sophomore transfer Tatum Wagner (Tulsa), with three points on one goal and one assist.
Scouting South Dakota State (1-2-1)
The Jackrabbits enter the week with a back-to-back results, claiming a 3-0 win over Northern Iowa last Friday as well as a 1-1 tie with Kansas on Sunday. South Dakota State dropped two matches against Utah State and Iowa State in the opening weekend of the season.
Madison Yueill leads the Jackrabbits with four points on two goals. The Jackrabbits have a combined four goals on the season. South Dakota State faces North Dakota on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
Bluejays Continue Facing Fresh Legs
Creighton's habit of facing a team with more rest than themselves will continue on Sunday as South Dakota State will have two additional days to prepare for the Bluejays.
Last weekend the Bluejays faced a Nebraska-Omaha squad that played just one match the previous weekend, while Iowa State just faced the Bluejays last weekend. Â
Baby Birds Spreading Their Wings
The Bluejays have already seen 12 of 15 newcomers make their Creighton debut this season. Maybe more impressive 10 newcomers have earned their first start in the opening four matches.
In Creighton's two contests last weekend the Bluejays started eight newcomers (seven freshmen) against Nebraska-Omaha and Iowa State.
And Taking Flight
The freshmen are doing much more than simply seeing time and earning starts for Creighton, the Bluejays' top three scorers are freshmen. Caeley Lordemann leads Creighton with five points (two goals and one assist), while Hannah Miller and Callie Hawkins sit in a tie for second with four points on two goals
Going into the match with Kansas State, freshmen have accounted for 16 of the Bluejays 24 points.
Youth Meets Youth
The meeting between the Bluejays and Wildcats could feature one of, if not the, youngest starting 22 on the pitch this season. Creighton started seven freshmen in its last contest, while Kansas State sent four into battle.
