Rhode Island & Yale Trip Has Personal Ties for Women's Soccer Staff
9/13/2016 10:22:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's soccer team will face two new opponents this week as the Bluejays face off with Rhode Island and Yale for the first time. While the Bluejays have not previously faced the Rams or the Bulldogs, the squads have deep ties. Both of the Bluejays' assistant coaches have worked for Rhode Island head coach Michael Neeham as Craig Scriven coached at Rhode Island from 2011-13 and Stephanie Rigamat assisted Needham at New Mexico State from 2008-10.

First Meeting with Rhode Island, 0-0-0
Thursday will mark the first meeting between the Rams and the Bluejays.
First Meeting with Yale, 0-0-0
Continuing the new nature of this road trip, Sunday will mark the first meeting in women's soccer between Yale and Creighton.
Scouting Rhode Island (2-3-2)
Coming off a 3-15-1 showing in 2015, Rhode Island is off to a much better this season. The Rams have posted victories in two of their last three contests, downing Vermont in overtime 2-1 (Sept. 4) and besting Maine 2-0 (Sept. 11).
Rhode Island has been challenged offensively this season, scoring just six goals in seven contests. Nicole Brennan and Taylor Ross lead the Rams with two goals on the season.
Defensively the Rams have been very good, goalkeeper Katie Nickles has allowed just eight goals (1.08 GAA) while playing every minute.
Scouting Yale (3-2-2)
Similar to Rhode Island, Yale is looking for a bounce back year as the Bulldogs closed 2015 with a 4-10-2 record. Yale broke out of the gate strong with three consecutive victories, but have gone 0-2-2 in the month of September.
One film the Bluejays are sure to study leading up to Sunday's contest is the Bulldogs battle with St. John's on Sept. 2. Yale was shutout by the Red Storm, 2-0, the only time this season the Bulldogs have failed to score.
Aerial Chavarin leads Yale with four goals and three assists (11 points), while Michelle Alozie is just a step back with three goals and three assists.
The Bulldogs have split time in goal between three goalkeepers.
Last Time Out: Déjà vu
After posting a come from behind 2-1 win at South Dakota State on Sept. 4, featuring a game-tying goal and game winning assist from senior Lauren Sullivan, the contest against South Dakota on Sept. 9 was eerily similar.
Creighton once again needed heroics from its leader Sullivan as the Bluejays collected another 2-1 victory over a team from the north. This time it was the Bluejays taking a 1-0 lead on a header from freshman Jaylin Bosak in the first half.
Although the Bluejays dominated possession, Creighton was unable to add on. As a result the Coyotes knotted the match at 1-1 via a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
Sullivan answered the challenge with her 23rd career goal in the 71st minute to lift the Bluejays to the win.
For Scriven and Rigamat, the Rhode Island Trip Has Personal Meaning
Assistant coaches Craig Scriven and Stephanie Rigamat will renew ties with a former ally in Rhode Island head coach Michael Needham this week.
Scriven was an assistant coach for Needham at Rhode Island from 2011-13. Rigamat, meanwhile, coached with Needham at UNLV (2004-05) and went with him as an assistant to New Mexico State (2008-10).
