CLEMSON, S.C. -- No. 8 Creighton picked up its first loss of the season after No. 2 Clemson scored a goal during the second minute of Friday night's match at Historic Riggs Field.
The Bluejays fell to 1-1-0, while the Tigers improved to 3-0-0.
Just a little over a minute into the match, Oliver Shannon reached the six-yard box with a defender between him and the goal, but a quick move to his right put him in position to launch a shot towards Creighton goalkeeper Alex Kapp. Shannon fired the ball just out of the reach of Kapp and inside the right post to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.
Iman Mafi picked up an assist on the play for Clemson.
The Tigers continued to control the ball during the first half, although each side had four shots through the first 45 minutes.
Creighton opened the second half with urgency and had an early opportunity with a free kick from the top of the box. Riggs Lennon launched the shot, but his attempt missed and went wide to the left.
The Bluejays' best scoring opportunity came during the 67th minute. Ricardo Perez sent a shot from the middle of the box that Clemson goalkeeper Ximo Miralles turned aside to set up a corner kick. Lucas Stauffer sent the corner towards the right side of the box where Lennon headed the ball and hit the crossbar.
Lennon led Creighton with five shots on Friday night.
After the Bluejays took a 10-7 advantage in shots, Clemson controlled the final 20 minutes and forced Kapp to make three saves to keep match at only a one-goal difference.
Kapp finished the contest with five saves.
True freshman Luke Haakenson earned his first start on Friday night.
Creighton is now 6-10-1 under coach Elmar Bolowich when trailing at the half, and 11-19-3 when the opponent scores first.
The Bluejays picked up their first loss during either of the first two matches of the season since 2006, when the team started 0-2 before ending the season with the Missouri Valley regular-season and tournament championships.
Creighton hosts crosstown rival Nebraska-Omaha on Monday night at 7 p.m. The match is the first regular-season contest between the two schools as Division I opponents and will be the Bluejays' home-opener after their match against San Francisco was canceled.
