Women's Basketball Bests Wichita State in Season Opener, 66-61

Omaha, Neb. -- Freshman Temi Carda delivered four decisive points in the final four minutes to help the Creighton women's basketball team hold off Wichita State, 66-61, on Friday, Nov. 10.
The win boosted the Bluejays to 1-0 on the season, while the Shockers fell to 0-1.
Creighton got off to a fast start with five straight points and built a 10-2 edge in the first three minutes. Four different Bluejays scored in that stretch, led by four points from senior Sydney Lamberty. Wichita State closed to within five (12-7) with five of the next seven points, but the Bluejays pushed their lead to nine at 20-11 by the end of the first period.
Each team delivered small bursts in the second period, with Creighton pushing its advantage to double-digits (23-13) and Wichita State getting as close as three at 23-20 with 4:37 left. The Bluejays, however, closed the quarter on an 8-4 run, capped by a running layup from Lamberty in the closing seconds to give Creighton a 31-24 lead at the break.
Following a Shocker bucket to open the third, the Bluejays went on a 10-0 run to grab their largest lead of the game (41-26) with 6:50 remaining. Once more the key to Creighton's burst was balanced scoring as junior Audrey Faber's four points led four players during the surge. With Creighton still ahead 15 at 43-28 (5:09), Wichita State responded by closing the on a 12-4 run to send the game to the fourth with the Bluejays ahead 47-40.
Wichita State continued to peck away at the Bluejay edge, finally tying the game at 51-51 with 6:03 remaining. This time it was Creighton with the response as Faber knocked down her lone three-pointer of the game. Following a defensive stop, senior Myah Mellman sank two clutch free throws and moments later Carda finished a fast break with an easy layup to give the Bluejays a 58-51 edge (3:42). Wichita State got within a bucket twice down the stretch, but each time Creighton was ready. The decisive bucket came from Carda as the Minnesota native cut into the lane for a critical layup in the closing moments of the period and the shot clock to put the Bluejays up 64-60 with 20 seconds left.
Faber led the Bluejays with 16 points, while Lamberty and Elger posted 14 and 12 respectively. Wichita State got a game-high 19 points from Rangie Bessard and 17 from Keke Thompson.
Creighton returns to the floor on Tuesday, Nov. 14 as the Bluejays travel to Vermillion, S.D. to face the South Dakota Coyotes at 7 pm.
