In a week it earned a fourth straight title, Bluejays claim Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week
OMAHA, Neb. -- In a week that saw Creighton Volleyball earn its fourth straight BIG EAST regular-season title, a pair of Bluejays took home weekly honors from the league office.
Lydia Dimke has been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this fall, and Brittany Witt earned her fifth overall and second straight BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week accolade.
Dimke averaged 11.75 assists, 4.12 digs, 1.00 kills and 0.38 blocks per set on .389 hitting and had a double-double in both matches as CU extended its win streak to 11.
Â
The reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year had 33 assists and 15 digs in CU's 3-0 sweep of Xavier on Saturday, setting an offense that hit .268. All five of her hitters to see regular floor time finished with seven kills or more.
Â
On Sunday, the senior from Ham Lake, Minn., showed why she's an All-America candidate by contributing 61 assists, 18 digs and seven kills on .500 hitting as CU rallied for a 3-2 win at third place Butler. Dimke had 18 assists, five digs, four kills and a block in the pivotal 38-36 second set win. Her 18 digs and seven kills on the day both tied season-highs, and her 61 assists were the second-most of her 2017 campaign.
Â
Dimke now ranks in the top three in BIG EAST play in assists per set and hitting percentage, and she directs a Bluejay offense that leads the league in hitting percentage, kills per set and assists per set.
Â
Witt averaged 4.88 digs per set last weekend to propel the Jays to two wins.
The Omaha native had 15 digs and four assists on Saturday in a 3-0 win over Xavier, leading a defense that held the Musketeers to .026 hitting in 114 swings.
Â
The sophomore libero then closed her weekend with 24 digs and a pair of aces in CU's 3-2 win at Butler, including 8 digs in CU's 38-36 set two victory. With her team trailing 6-4 in the fifth set, Witt had an ace during a 7-0 serving run that gave CU the lead for good to clinch the title.
Â
Witt also handled 34 serve receptions without being aced on the week, with 17 of those being converted into first ball kills.
Â
Witt now owns 10 or more digs in each of her last 12 matches and leads all players in BIG EAST play with 4.57 digs per set.
No. 13 Creighton (22-5, 15-1 BIG EAST) closes the regular-season this weekend when it visits Villanova on Friday at 6 p.m. Central before finishing up with Georgetown on Saturday at 5 p.m. Central.
