Women's Basketball Begins Final Regular Season Road Trip at Xavier

Omaha, Neb. -- Heading into the final turn of the regular season, the Creighton women's basketball team begins a two-game road trip with an opportunity to clinch at least a share of the BIG EAST Championship. The road trip begins on Friday night at Xavier.

Creighton leads the overall series with Xavier, 5-2. The first meeting between the two teams came as members of the BIG EAST in 2013-14.
The Bluejays are 1-2 against the Musketeers in Cincinnati, dropping the last two meetings in heart breaking fashion.Xavier collected 66-65 comeback win with a last possession bucket in 2015, then repeated the feat last season winning 57-55 on Feb. 7.

Sunday was the final home game for seniors Marissa Janning, MC McGrory, Brianna Rollerson and Lauren Works. One of the more touching moments of the evening came right out of the gate as McGrory, who was forced to end her career due to multiple concussion in December, returned to the starting lineup for the first three minutes. McGrory fired off one three-pointer before giving way to junior Sydney Lamberty.
Women's Hoops Ranked for the First Time Since 1992
Riding a six-game winning streak and in contention to win the BIG EAST Conference, the Creighton women's basketball team received some national recognition today as the Bluejays were ranked #25 in the latest USA Today/Coaches Poll.
This marks just the sixth time in program history that the Bluejays have been ranked, all five previous appearances came in 1992. This is the third time the Bluejays have earned a spot in the Coaches Poll, the last coming on April 6, 1992 as No. 24. Creighton.
The Bluejays wrap up the regular season this weekend at Xavier (Feb. 24) and at Butler (Feb. 26). Creighton enters the weekend 20-6 overall and tied with DePaul at 14-2 in BIG EAST play.

The Bluejay women climbing into the ranking while the Creighton MBB team is slotted at No. 23 in the AP & Coaches Poll marks the first time that both programs have been ranked at the same time.
Flanery Guides Bluejays to 20-Win Season for Ninth Time
Sunday's 67-60 win over St. John's pushed Creighton to 20 wins plateau for the ninth time under head coach Jim Flanery. The last time Creighton reached 20 wins was during the 2013-14 season, finished 20-14.
Prior to Flanery taking the reigns, the Creighton women's program reached 20 or more wins eight times from 1973-2002 (29 seasons).
Flanery has done so nine times in his 15 years atop the program.

- Creighton and Xavier enter Friday's battle heading in different directions. The Bluejays are in the midst of their longest win streak of the season at six games. The Musketeers, meanwhile, have dropped 11 of 12 and four straight.
- Seniors Marissa Janning, MC McGrory, Brianna Rollerson and Lauren Works played their final home game as Bluejays last Sunday in a 67-60 victory over the Red Storm.
- Both of Creighton's games this weekend will be Pink Games as Xavier and Butler will face the Bluejays in its annual game to raise awareness for cancer.
- In the first meeting between the two squads, Creighton defeated Xavier 63-52 in Omaha, on Dec. 30. However, the Musketeers held a 26-25 lead at halftime.
- Maddison Blackwell led the Musketeers with 10 points in the first meeting, while got 15 points from Marissa Janning.
- Xavier, however, has bested the Bluejays in the last two meetings in the Cintas Center. Each of those games were decided on a last possession shot by Xavier.
- Creighton is 2-0 in overtime games in BIG EAST play, while Xavier is 0-3 in games requiring an extra session. The Musketeers pushed Villanova to double overtime last Friday, before falling 76-71.

- While the Musketeers have dropped 11 of 12 in BIG EAST play, Xavier has more than shown it still has the will to win. The Musketeers pushed Butler and Georgetown to overtime in the Cintas Center and took Villanova to double overtime last weekend in Pennsylvania.
- Raeshaun Gaffney is the lone Musketeer averaging double-figures this season at 14.4 ppg. In BIG EAST play she is at 14.1 ppg, while Maddison Blackwell is averaging 8.9 ppg on the season and 9.6 in conference action.
- Xavier has struggled from the field this season, shooting just 38.9% from the field as a team. Â
Keys to the Game w/Xavier
- The first quarter: In the first meeting Creighton trailed at the end of the first quarter and the first half. The Bluejays do not want to allow Xavier within striking distance as the game goes on.
- Managing emotion: This applies to both squads as Creighton became ranked for the first time since 1992 earlier this week and knows it has a chance for at least a share of the BIG EAST title with victories over Xavier and Butler. For the Musketeers, this will be the final weekend at home for seniors Blackwell and Gaffney.
- Outside Shooting: In the first matchup the Bluejays were limited to just 5-of-22 from long range (22.7%), while Xavier has allowed it opposition to shoot 41.1% (98-of-323) in BIG EAST play.
