Bluejays will face a challenging schedule
OMAHA, Neb. -- Fresh of the program's first Elite Eight last fall, the Creighton Volleyball program returns to the court this weekend while opening the 2017 spring schedule.
The Bluejays will play three matches in the TVA 2017 Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, April 1st, starting with a 9:45 am match vs. Iowa. CU then meets the Kansas State "White" at 11:30 am, before closing the day with a contest against Kansas State "Purple" at 1:15 pm. Tickets to attend the matches at The Volleyball Academy (11934 Portal Road in Omaha, NE 68128) are $3 each, and spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Iowa went 19-13 last season while ranking as one of the nation's most improved teams. Kansas State went 21-10 last fall, including a victory over Creighton, and reached the Second Round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Creighton returns to the court on Sunday, April 9th, with a game against perennial power Wisconsin. That contest will take place at 2 pm in Mount Vernon, Iowa, on the campus of Cornell College. Tickets are $6 and on sale through Cornell. The Badgers went 28-5 last season, dropping a 3-2 match to eventual national champion Stanford in the Regional Final.
The spring season continues on April 13th with CU's lone match of the spring at D.J. Sokol Arena. That contest will take place against Nebraska, but is closed to the media and general public. It is the only scheduled meeting between the teams in 2017. Nebraska was ranked fourth in the final 2016 AVCA poll after losing in the national semifinal to Texas.
Creighton closes out the spring with an April 21 contest at South Dakota. That match in Vermillion will take place at 6:30 pm. The Coyotes went 25-7 last season while reaching the final of the Summit League Tournament.
Creighton went 29-7 last season, tying the school record for wins in a season while reaching the Elite Eight for the first time. The Bluejays were ranked ninth in the year-end AVCA Top 25 poll, and return all but four players from last year's club.
This Saturday (April 1) also marks the final day of a Creighton Volleyball season ticket promotion, where all new season ticket holders can receive tickets for just $89 next season. That can be done by visiting www.gocreighton.com/vbtickets.
