Men's Basketball Drops Regular-Season Finale With Marquette

Bluejays will meet Providence to open the BIG EAST Tournament
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- A hot-shooting Marquette team was too much to handle as Creighton men's basketball closed the regular-season on Saturday with a 91-83 loss before 17,630 fans at BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
Creighton (23-8, 10-8 BIG EAST) wraps up the regular-season in a four-way tie for third place with Marquette (19-11, 10-8 BIG EAST), Seton Hall and Providence. The Bluejays will be the sixth seed at next week's BIG EAST Tournament, presented by JEEP, and take on third-seeded Providence. That game will start at 8:30 p.m. Central at Madison Square Garden and air on FS1.
After a Justin Patton dunk on Creighton's first possession, Marquette embarked on an 11-0 run that featured eight points by Jajuan Johnson and force an early timeout from Greg McDermott. As the teams traded offensive haymakers, Creighton narrowed the gap to three at 36-33. CU would have a chance to tie but had a three-pointer rim out, and MU took advantage with the next eight points to break open its largest lead of the half at 44-33. CU trimmed MU's lead back down to six (46-40), but the Golden Eagles scored six of final eight points of the half to take a 52-42 lead into the break.
Khyri Thomas led CU with 13 points in the first half. Johnson scored 18 points in the first half for MU, tying his career-high with four three-point baskets. MU shot 54.5 percent overall and 9-of-16 from long-range in the opening 20 minutes, dishing 13 assists on 18 baskets.
Marquette quickly opened a 15 point lead in the second half before a 10-0 Bluejay run sliced the margin to 67-62. Thomas started the spurt with a three-pointer after Johnson missed a breakaway jam, and a Patton dunk and Davion Mintz floater made it a single-figure game with 14:15 to play. Thomas bookended the run with another three-pointer.
Marquette answered Creighton's flurry with a 13-2 burst of its own, pushing its lead to 80-64 on a Sam Hauser trey with 9:51 left. MU had just 11 points in the final 9:51, but it was enough to hold off the Bluejays. CU got within six points (87-81) with 14.3 seconds left, but got no closer.
Thomas had a career-high 23 points for Creighton, adding six rebounds and four assists. He was joined in double-figures by Cole Huff (11), Patton (11) and Foster (10). CU won the rebound battle, 35-32, and had 23 assists on 33 baskets.
MU was led by 20 points by Johnson, three shy of his career-high. Markus Howard added 18 points and nine assists. Also in double-figures for MU were Katin Reinhardt (12), Luke Fischer (13) and Sam Hauser (11). The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from three-point range (14-28) and made 53.2 percent of its shots overall (33-62).
