No. 2 Women's Basketball Defeats No. 10 Butler to Reach Semifinals, 64-55

Milwaukee, Wis. -- Led by a combined 33 points from sophomore Audrey Faber (17) and freshman Jaylyn Agnew (16), the second-seeded Creighton women's basketball team defeated No. 10 Butler, 64-55, in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, March 5.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 23-6 on the season, while Butler season came to a close at 6-25.
Creighton started in an all too familiar fashion as the Bluejays trailed by as much as nine in the opening period, 14-5 with 2:00 left. Over the final 90 seconds of the period, Faber began to assert herself with a driving layup followed by a three-ball from the corner to get the Bluejays back within striking distance, down 14-10 heading to the second period.
Butler was able to keep Creighton at bay early in the second, pushing back out in front 23-15 with 6:07 to draw a timeout from Bluejay head coach Jim Flanery. The moment to breath proved pivotal as Agnew converted a layup along the baseline, then Faber knocked down her second trey of the game to make it a one possession game, 23-20 (4:07).
Over the final four minutes the two squads exchanged buckets, but the final play set a tone for the remainder of the contest. Down 31-26 with under a minute to play, Faber drew a double-team in the post. Wisely the Iowa native found senior Lauren Works in the corner for a three-ball to send the Bluejays to the break down just two, 31-29.
Often referring to themselves as a third quarter team, the Bluejays lived up to the moniker by outscoring Butler 22-13 in the frame. Creighton claimed it first lead of the game in the opening moments of the quarter as Works drove through the lane to knot the score at 31-31 (9:32), then senior Brianna Rollerson hit one-of-two from the charity stripe to push the Bluejays in front (32-31) with 8:46 left.
The lead toggled back-and-forth over the following four minutes, but a 10-2 run by Creighton to close the frame sent the Bluejays to the final period with a 51-44 lead. Agnew guided the late surge in the third with five points in the final three minutes.
Creighton put the game away in the opening moments of the fourth with a 7-0 run to push its lead to 58-44. Senior Marissa Janning opened the final period with a trey from the top of the key, while Works added two free throws and junior Sydney Lamberty capped things off with a running layup. The Bluejays kept Butler at a double-digit margin until the closing seconds to advance.
Faber and Agnew led all scorers, while Works was the only other Bluejay to reach double figures with 10 points. Butler got a team-high 11 from Taylor Buford in the loss.
Creighton will face No. 3 Marquette on Monday at 3:00 pm in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Golden Eagles defeated No. 6 Georgetown, 80-66, to advance to battle the Bluejays. Creighton defeated Marquette in both meetings between the two teams during the regular season.
