Bluejays win five of six singles matches
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team closed out its regular season with a 5-2 victory over the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks on Saturday afternoon at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 12-9 heading into the BIG EAST Championships that will take place April 27-30 in Cayce, S.C.
Creighton's Hylan Miller and Claire Embree clinched a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Mavericks picked up victories at each of the top two spots to earn the doubles point.
The Bluejays responded in singles with two straight-sets victories and three three-set wins to claim the overall dual.
Claire Embree tied the overall match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position.
The Mavericks regained the lead with a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, but Creighton's Ashley Ishimura clinched a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top spot to tie the match at 2-2.
After falling 6-3 in the first set, Katherine Nelsen tied the No. 3 singles match with a 6-4 second-set win. In the deciding set, Nelsen pulled out a 6-2 victory for the Bluejays' third singles win.
Hylan Miller's three-set win at the No. 5 slot sealed the overall dual. Miller, a transfer from Nebraska Omaha, opened the match with a 6-4 win in the opening frame. The Mavericks No. 5 competitor evened it with a 6-3 win before Miller won the third set 6-3.
Darby Rosette battled back from a 6-4 first set loss to win 7-5, 6-3 and give Creighton its fifth singles victory of the afternoon.
"Today was a very hard fought win for our girls," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Omaha has a strong team and we knew we would have to keep our emotions in check and have a full team effort competing to the end. It is always very taxing mentally playing a city rival and having Hylan be a transfer from (Nebraska Omaha) made this a real emotional match.
"I'm proud of the complete effort our team put fourth to barely squeak this out against another high-quality opponent."
Saturday's wins marked Lilly's combined 399th victory as the head coach of Creighton's men's and women's tennis programs. Lilly has a chance for win number 400 on Sunday as the Bluejay men host Hastings College.
The Creighton women return to the courts Thursday, April 27th at the BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, S.C.
