Manhattan, Kan. -- Trailing 2-1 midway through the second half, the Creighton women's soccer team showed its grit as the Bluejays rallied to earn a 3-2 win on Sunday, Sept. 10.
The victory was Creighton's first of the season as the Bluejays moved to 1-5-1, while Kansas State fell to 3-3-1.
Creighton scratched the scoreboard first with a goal in the 29th minute as junior Kaira Houser drew a foul in the box. The resulting penalty kick was put away by sophomore Taryn Jakubowski to give the Bluejays a 1-0 edge.
It remained 1-0 through the end of the first half, but Kansas State scored consecutive goals in the 53rd and 65th minutes to surge ahead 2-1.
Sophomore Hannah Miller responded just over three minutes later, drawing a penalty just outside the 18-yard box. Earning a free kick, Miller made the most of the opportunity by blasting her first goal of the season into the back of the net at the 68:12 mark.
With renewed energy the Bluejay offense reclaimed the lead as sophomore Kylin Grubb headed home the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. It was Grubb's second goal of the season.
Holding the advantage once more, the Creighton defense refused to allow Kansas State the equalizer, despite the Wildcats firing off 22 shots in the second half alone.
Kansas State outshot Creighton 33 to 9 in the match, while Wildcats held a 13-6 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper McKenzue Meola tied a career-high with 11 saves.
Creighton returns home to face off with Drake on Wednesday, Sept. 13 for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
