Creighton Women's Soccer Looks to Continue Winning Ways Against Drake

Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's soccer team seems to have turned the page on its slow start as the Bluejays posted results in each of their last two contests with a tie versus UMKC (1-1 on Sept. 8) and a 3-2 victory over Kansas State on Sunday, Sept. 10. Up next for Creighton is the former Missouri Valley Conference rival, Drake on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 pm.

Series History: Creighton leads Drake, 10-6-1
Conference foes in the Missouri Valley from 2002 - 2012, Creighton has gotten the better the Bulldogs in the two meetings since the Bluejays went to the BIG EAST in 2013. Creighton posted single goal victories in 2014 (4-3 in Omaha on Sept. 7) and again in Des Moines in 2015 (3-2 on Sept. 22).

Scouting Drake (3-3-1)
The Bulldogs return eight starters and 18 letterwinners overall, after closing 2016 with a 12-4-3 record. Drake was picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley preseason poll, drawing one first place vote.
After dropping its season opener at UNLV, the Bulldogs won three of their next four. The only loss coming to Marquette, 3-0, on Aug. 25.
Rebecca Rodgers leads the Bulldog offense with four points on two goals, while Haley Morris has a team high 41 saves in seven matches. Morris, however, has allowed 11 goals in 565 minutes for a 1.75 goals against average.
Hannah Redefined Miller Time
After watching her squad from the sidelines as Kansas State surged ahead 2-1 in the second half, sophomore Hannah Miller entered the field of play in the 62nd minute (61:55). Over the next 11 minutes Miller created a penalty just outside the box, turned that penalty into a goal on a direct kick (68:12) and served the ball to fellow sophomore Kylin Grubb for the game-winning goal at 72:36.
Meola Showed Grace Under Fire
While Miller provided the spark for the offense, goalkeeper McKenzie Meola battled through 22 second half shots from Kansas State to preserve Creighton first win of the season. Meola collected tied a career-high with 11 saves, facing 33 shots from the Wildcats in the match.
Bluejays Defense Bends, Allowing Most Shots Since 2007, but Doesn't Break in the Win over Kansas State
Kansas State's 33 shots on Sept. 10 put the Bluejay defense under immense pressure. However when it counted in the final 17 minutes with a one goal lead, Creighton fended off seven Wildcat shots to preserve the win. The 33 shots allowed are the most by a Creighton opponent since USC sent 37 shots against the Bluejays in an NCAA Tournament contest on Nov. 16, 2007.
The victory over Kansas State marked the first time since at least 2001 that Creighton allowed 30 shots or more and earned a victory.

After posting consecutive two goal performances at home on Sept. 3 & 8, the Bluejays delivered its first road goal in the opening period and went on for the 3-2 win.
Turning the Page from August to September has Made the Difference
After not scoring a goal in four road losses to open the season, Creighton has collected seven goals in its last three matches. The difference may be as simple of changing the calendar. The four road losses each came in August, while Creighton's offense got rolling in the Sept. 3 contest with South Dakota State.
