Men's Soccer Shuts Out South Florida During Socctoberfest

Creighton improved to 6-0 during Socctoberfest matches
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team defeated South Florida 2-0 during Friday night's Socctoberfest at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 3-2-0, while the Bulls fell to 1-3-0.
Creighton is now a perfect 6-0 during Socctoberfest matches which have been played annually since 2012.
After an evenly played first half, the Bluejays broke through for a pair of goals during the final 45 minutes in front of a crowd of 3,889.Â
Luke Haakenson scored his second goal of the season during the 62nd minute. Joel Rydstrand sent a long pass down the left side of the pitch where Haakenson recovered the ball just outside the 18-yard box. Haakenson ran past a USF defender before sending the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Rydstrand recorded his team-leading third assist of the season on the play.
The Bluejays extended their lead with a goal during the 82nd minute. Freshman Kuba Polat scored his first collegiate goal to give Creighton a 2-0 edge. Noah Franke crossed a ball from the right side of the 18-yard box towards the front of the goal inside the six-yard box where Polat connected to send the ball past the Bulls' goalkeeper.
Creighton and South Florida each managed only two shots during the first half, and the Bulls held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Bluejays did not record a shot on goal during the opening 45 minutes, while both of USF's chances were stopped by Creighton goalkeeper Michael Kluver.
Kluver ended the match with a pair of saves to record his second shutout of the season.
Creighton held a slight 7-6 edge in shots, while South Florida owned a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks at the end of 90 minutes.
Bryce Gibson earned his first career start on Friday and played a career-high 68 minutes.Â
The Bluejays return to action and will open BIG EAST conference play on Sept. 16. Creighton is scheduled to play Butler at noon Central in Indianapolis, Indiana.Â
