Second Half Surge Leads Women's Basketball to 68-51 Win at Seton Hall

South Orange, N.J. -- Behind 41 second-half points, the Creighton women's basketball defeated Seton Hall 68-51 on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 9-4 on the season and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 8-6 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
A slow start by the Bluejays allowed the Pirates to race out to a 9-4 edge and Seton Hall held an 11-6 lead with 2:11 left in the opening frame. Back-to-back jumpers from sophomore Jaylyn Agnew and senior Kylie Brown pulled the Bluejays within a point at 11-10. The teams traded buckets before the end of the quarter sending the game to the second with Seton Hall up 13-12.
Agnew remained hot as the second opened, draining a trey to put the Bluejays ahead for the first time. Moments later senior Myah Mehlman knocked down another three-ball to give the Bluejays an 18-13 edge (8:16). Before the end of the period, Creighton pushed the lead to as much of seven (27-20) with 1:57 left and took a 27-22 lead into the break.
While Agnew guided Creighton in the first half with nine points, sophomore Olivia Elger dropped 14 points in the second half to steady Creighton.
Seton Hall closed within one point twice in the opening moments of the third, but a 7-0 Creighton run gave the Bluejays room to breathe. Up 29-28 with 6:23 left in the third, senior Sydney Lamberty grabbed an offense board and a put back. After a defensive stop, Agnew knocked down a jumper, then Elger drained a three-pointer to give the Bluejays a 36-28 advantage with 4:13 left. Following four straight from the Pirates, the Bluejays responded with buckets from Brown, Agnew and two free throws from Elger to make it 42-32 (1:15). Creighton took a 45=34 lead into the final frame.
Down the stretch Seton Hall turned to a full-court press. The Bluejays turned the pressure into easy layups, hitting nine of 12 shots in the frame as Creighton breezed to the 68-51 win.
Agnew led Creighton with 17 points, while Elger delivered 16 and Lamberty finished with 13 points. Seton Hall got a game-high 19 points from Shadeen Samuels in the loss.
The Bluejays return to the court on Friday, Jan. 5 as Creighton heads to Queens, N.Y. to face St. John's at 7:00 pm.
